Just wanted to let you guys know that Gamespy.com has an Nvidia vs. ATI Poll. Am I the only one that's surprised that ATI is winning the poll even after all the hype of the GeForce 6800 and Nvidia's (I think) higher market share? It is close though. :fanboy:

P.S. I like both companies (No fan boy here) :scatter:

Same here. I own a Radeon 9600XT but my next card will probably be a Geforce 6800 non ultra.

ATI is winning because everyone at Gamespy thinks that Half Life 2 is the l33t gam3 that PWNZs everything else and it runs faster ATI.

ah who da hell cares. gamespy's readers probably know nothing about hardware and just listen closely to the grape vine for which company makes the more "l33t" hardware.

"oh my friend who knows about computers says radeons are better than geforce, that's made by ATI is it???" ---> "ok ATI is better!"

^ and so the n00bs ran rampant flashing which ever maker they think is good without any knowledge what so ever apart from what they heard. that was the case when NV made the better cards and morons will always be morons.

Yes... but those guys DO buy lots of 3Dcards, even if they don't know that well what they just bought.
Those numbers are gold to manufacturers. Need a example? :

I have a friend who was very happy with his GF5200FX, which IMO is #$%%#"!, since if you pay a little more, you'll end up having a much better card, lasting maybe a year more.
He said i was wrong, that card was great for the price...CAUSE it was a Geforce! lol
When i told him he had many Geforce models, he was somewhat amazed, since he only knew his card and the, by then, top 5900U ( $$$ ), hehe. ;)

These guys buy a lot of bad hardware just because it's a... whatever! ;)
And in 3Dcards, they buy them in millions, so they do care a lot about this kind of survey, and in this case, also amazed me. Cool. :D
We read "thousands" of websites to choose our card ( well, we do some research, hehe ), if necessary, but most people do it by name. ;)

Im actually quite suprised, most people know nothing about hardware except that anything with a big name is good... Im suprised so many people are going for ATI

Well, as a long time member of GameSpy's community, I'd agree that it's probably from what all the readers have seen surrounding ATI and Half-Life 2 (the performance difference, and the free vouchers).

ATi seems to be pretty popular generally though, as far as brand names go. On their forums you'll get just as many people asking "Is this Radeon I want to buy a good card?" as you do people asking that about GeForces.

And in the gaming world, a lot of advertising is simply done by word of mouth. One gamer gets a Radeon and likes it, and tells his friend to get one as well.

id take it with a grain of salt...it seems that polls mean nothing these days. i mean look at the bush/gore election ;)

Yeah, and I'm not sure if any of you followed GameSpy's TitleFight series... apparently Civilization 3 is more popular than GTA: Vice City...

All this indicates is, ATi made its name known.
Nvidia could win such polls hands down, two yrs ago.

Actually ATI has the second largest share as of now behind Intel.

And I agree that the common viewer of Gamespy, Gamespot, IGN, and a host of others don't know the first thing about computer hardware.

yes, marketing is doing a really good job. I can't stand it when people say I'm getting a "geforce" or a "radeon" though. It's like saying I'm in "computers" or I'm getting a "ford". Doesn't say much does it? Yet people say it all the time...

face it - we don't make the companies any money. It's the customers that don't have a clue about what they're getting that makes up the majority of the target market. In those cases, filling their heads with brand names is of prime importance.

I think you guys are overlooking something.

I think the big "ta do" over nVidia "cheating" last year has had more impact than you guys might think. That type stuff scares a non-techy consumer more than a techy one. Of the many people I deal with that are not tech savvy... a lot of them have heard about nVidia's "cheating" and have been steered by people to go ATi. Reputation goes farther than anything to non-techies. Why do you think so many "sheep" buy Dells? Dell has a good reputation.

That said, the exact accuracy of the poll will always be in question because of people that can vote multiple times. If the poll is any true reflection of those consumers... I think it's pretty evident that nVidia shot themselves in the foot with their BS tactics last year.

Regards,

Taz

I don't know a single person who thinks highly of dells. Their rep was good in the late 90s.. but these days? Cut corners everywhere. Why do you think they're so profitable?

To be honest there has been very little hyper about the new cards that are coming out.

ATI is winning because they don't cheat their customer into believeing more expensive cards are faster

Yet they are making the right decision by going a 9600XT over a 5200 ...i'd rather pay cheaper for better performance then some lame nvidia POS that dies on PS 2.0

Except the 9600xt costs 3 times as much as the 5200...so I'm not sure how they're comparable. BUT, what about those that are getting 9600xt cards rather than FX5900s (since they're the same price now)? Even with PS2.0 a 5900 is still overall faster than a 9600, and in everything else it totally smokes it.

But it's not suprising ATI is winning, a lot of people switched over to ATI for the 9700/9800, and the poll is going to reflect who won the most recent "chip battle". If the 6800 is better than the R420, then Nvidia will probably return to the lead in polls like that.

Not the case, many stores in area have a 5200 170$ for teh 256mb ver and then 9600XT for 159

Not surprising at all.....
Remember the majority of people thinking the NV30 would "own" the R9700? Simply because the Ti4600 was tops at the time....a good reputation will go far, but you must eventually prove you're on top...as ATI did w/ the R9700, and as nVidia must do w/ the GF6800 to regain the "crown"

Well yeah, the 256 meg version, of course those are going to cost more. But the 128 meg versions of the 5200 are $100, they only made a 256m version to take advantage of those who think video ram actually matters on a card like that. All the stores by me still have 9600xt cards for $200, and they don't even include the HL2 voucher anymore...
