Hi guys,

i currently have a old Asus GeForce 2MX 32M SDR in my P3 600Mhz 512Mb ram and i just can't ply anymore with this 2mx. i'm thinking of replacing it with a mx440 or 5200, 9200, 9200SE. i know my CPU will be a bottleneck but i plan to replace all of this next year for PCI express and athlon64 and maybe a 6800 :) but for now i just want a replacement to be able to wait till then. i don't want/need to get card worthing more than 80$can so it's like $50us i think?

i will mostly play quake3 (old but still good), unreal 2k3, 2k4, unreal2, and mostly racing game like colin mcrae 2, 3, 4, need for speed 5, 6, underground, and this kinf of stuff.

oh and i can't play in 1600x1200 right now, my monitor don't support it, so i'm stock in 1280x1024

what do you suggest me?

I would wait and see for NV4x derived value part, possibly called 6200. Or if you want a better card and don't want to wait for 6200, wait a few months until 5700LE is around the price point you want to pay. The 5700LE is certainly a better choice than the 5200.

Wait untill the r420 is released, within 2 weeks prices on the cards up to 9800xt will have dropped so you can pick one up for dirt cheap.

Not for $50 he won't.

The FX 5700LE/non-ultra is a good choice, or for a bit less you can pick up a GeForce4 Ti4200. Those are running about US$70-90.

I would get a Radeon 9600 or something for now.

thanks for you reply,

but won't here a fx5700 cost 160$can and ti4200 240$can, and i don't want to put more than 80 to 100$can for a card. don't forget it will be on a P3 600 with a 100mhz fsb. won't a 4200 or 5700 be overkill for my system?

here are some choices that i have:
ATI Radeon 9200SE 128Mb [TV Out] $66.00
Asus Radeon 9200SE 128Mb [T] $75.00
ATI Radeon 9200 128Mb [TV Out] $99.00
ATI Radeon 9200 64Mb [TV Out] $79.00
Asus V9180 GF4 MX-440 64Mb [TV Out] 8X [MAGIC] $69.00
MSI [8935-010] GF4 MX440 64Mb [TV Out] $64.00
MSI [8911-280] GFX-5200 128Mb *TD* $99.00
MSI [8919-110] GFX-5200 128Mb *TD* $99.00
i don't know whats the difference between the two lase card?

all of this is in canadian $. i'm thinking between a mx440 at 69$ or a 9200Se at 66$.

i will wait until ati release the r420 and for the nv40 to become available in store for the price drop and i'm gonna get one of those.

the problem is i don't know how much my CPU will bottleneck the vid card.
what do you recommend?

A 9200SE then reason being newer games MUST have have a pixle shader in order to run so the MX won't even run them at all. The more the year goes by the less likely the MX will run the newer games.

Bleh, I have a GF3 that would spank all those cards that I'd let go for $35... :p

The cpu dependant vertex shader of the 9200 and the poor scaling of the 5200 would make a good case for a GF3...

Plus, a GF3 is ALSO a happy (~12k in 3dmark01 with today's fastest cpu's, ~10k in 2.6-3.0 setups, ~9k in 1.4-2.4 rigs...) card when coupled with faster cpu's...

Absolutely right, cant believe i dint see that:

Theres a 9600 for 100 can here:
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=11471&vpn=S-9600SE-128

and a 9200se for 74 can here:
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=10202&vpn=1024-HC26-J0-SA

These guys are your best shot when buying in canada i find, but still wait till they get the new cards in stock and watch their prices drop. You may be able to get something better than a 9600 if your lucky.

What about just a standard 9200? 128bit memory bus. If not I would go for the 5200.

R9000/9200= teh n0es for lower mhz systems!! vertex shading shifted to cpu!! Aaugh!!!

Excuse the double vote here, but, um, *ahem* GEFORCE 3...

:p

If you're going to spend that $$$ on a brand new system this summer, I'd just hold out until then. None of the cards you've listed in the poll will really have that much of an impact on your performance to warrant the cost. You'll be happier to have that extra $80 or so when it comes time to piece together a new system.

Even with one of these cards there is no way you'd be able to play any of the mentioned games (with the exception of perhaps Q3) at 1600x1200, let alone 1280x1024.

You'll barely be able to play those games at 800x600 on your current video card or any of the other ones you suggested. Wait it out and save your money, you'll be glad you did.

Holy COw,I always hear the same answers, wait, and get a bla, bla bla,
He has a list and prices of the cards in a local shop he can afford.
He said that he is going to upgrade his whole system later anyway.
Give Him A REAL answer, like..................
Id go for the 9200 with 128 bit memory, 128 megs on the card.
There was that so hard????.

Saying he won't receive any tangible benefit from spending his money on those cards isn't a real answer? :retard:

I did!I recall seeing "Keep the GF2MX for one year" as a poll option. So we did answer his question.

ok sorry guys for the problem that this may have caused...
i just builded a system for a friend (XP2800+, 512mb ram) and he bought a Asus 9200SE to be able to make he's computer work for now, but he's going for a 9800Pro when he will got the cash. i was really impressed with the performance of he's card (running the demo of unreal 2k4 at 1024x768x32 at full speed) so i said maybe i will be able to play the same game at 800x600 with my P3 600mhz. i'll be fine with 800x600 res for now cause i currently can't play unreal 2k4 at all even in 512x384 i get like 10fps...
if my cpu will be the bottleneck and that i won't get a noticeable change upgrading then i won't lost my money.
and i remind that my monitor CAN'T display 1600x1200 and i will upgrade my whole system not this summer be next summer as pci express board will be too expensive and prolly unreliable for now...

I'm not sure about 2K4 but the engine is basically the same with a few minor improvements. Hell, if that doesn't work, there's always the software renderer if you really need that UT fix.

unreal 2k3 run good to (i finished the game using 800x600 and low settings) but the demo of unreal 2k4 is just unplayable (10-15fps avg and drop to 3-4 when i fight...). software isn't an option for me...

ragejg: i'm still interested in your GF3

ragejg: i'm still interested in your GF3For that kind of money, it'd be worth getting to hold you over. It'd put you over the hump just enough to play 2K4 and enjoy it. When I went to a GF3 ti200 with my PIII 600 setup, my 3dmark2k1 score topped out around 4000, up from around 1500 with the GF2MX. Not to mention that the GF3 is up to DX8 spec. Sounds like a steal to me.

Bluescreen: I'll shoot ya a PM shortly about the GF3...

btw, does your rig overclock at all? I know some P3 600's coulddo around 800 or so... if your setup can it,the GF3 would be greatly helped both by fsb and raw megahertz...

yes my p3 overclock pretty well. i just go to my bios and set CPU speed to 800mhz and voila. the temp get up a bit but i can manage to get some more cooling and overclocking isn't a problem at all.
