R420 vs. NV40:

*Remember that this is all just an ATI demo, meant to show the ATI card in the best light, I'm not saying that this card is for sure a 6800U killer, but it just may end up that way.*

Finally, the NDA has broken, and I can say what I know. Since last week it has been absolutely killing me to keep this under wraps, but since I was threatened to be brutally raped if I did say anything, I kept quiet. (I wasn't actually offered to be brutally raped, I just thought I would use it for dramatic effect.;)) I know alot of the benchmarks have already leaked, but I thought I would just fill you in with what I know.

First off, the X800XT is a single slot solution, as many of you already know, has only one molex connector, and can be fit into a SFF running on a 250W PSU. It is not meant to compete with the 6800U, the X800 Pro is. The ATI rep said the X800XT will be 30-40% faster than the 6800U, pretty damn impressive if you ask me. And even the X800 Pro will beat the 6800U in most tests. The test system was a P4 3.0 with 512mb of ram. Pretty low end specs...

For some game test the ATI rep loaded up a game of FarCry on the X800XT. At 1600x1200 8XAA/8XAF, the X800XT scored an impressive 80FPS outdoors, and 60FPS indoors. Thats nearly twice the speed of the 6800U at the same settings going from reviews. This was all witnessed. This is going against THG review, but I'm just reporting what was saw.
Next up was the new ATI demo that we have been slowly seeing some pictures of. It is not actually just the chick, it is her kicking some serious ass. A lot of baddies on the screen, 80K poly's on her, 60K on the other baddies, if I'm remembering correctly. It all ran completely smooth. It is very impressive.
And now, some Serious Sam 2, ATI apparantly showed their new compression technology to Croteam, and they created an entire character with it. Not sure if any of you saw the one SS2 video, with the dancing football guy, but that video is running on an X800XT, and it is using the new compression technology.

The ATI rep said that Doom3 will probably run faster on nVidia hardware, (isn't nVidia is paying ID millions of dollars?) The ATI rep says that their card will probably run Half Life 2 better, (and just maybe they are not paying Valve millions of dollars to do it... ;) )

He said that they see a very big market for overclockers, and the X800XT is a VERY good overclocker, he said they don't promote overclocking, but they know alot of people buy their cards for this very reason. This sounds very interesting to me, I am curious how well these can overclock. This may be the deciding point for a lot of people, hopefully some reviewers later on today post their real world findings. The guy did say that it runs cooler than the 9800XT.

When asked about PS3.0, the he said that they feel it is not important right now, they are saving that for the R500. He said that anything that is in PS3.0, can be done in 2.0. Many people have said the same thing, but I am still rather curious as to whether it has any benefits whatsoever.

Finally the X800 Pro will be priced at $399, and the XT priced at $499. The pro is 12 pipes, and the XT is 16 Pipes. As for availability, we are expecting to have the Pro's in store TODAY (4th of May). Wow, sounds too good to be true, but that is what was said. I will get back with you guys later if we actually did get some in. The XT version is going to come in 2 weeks.

I still haven't completely decided which card I will go with this time, but I think I am leaning a little more towards the ATI side.

Thank god I was able to tell somebody... I can now sleep peacefully :)

BTW: Sorry If I mislead some of you guys to think I actually had the card... I don't have it, but hopefully in 2 weeks I will :)

Any questions?

Well the truth is already out there, the inq has a link to to leaked benches and the X800XT is not that much faster then the 6800, small margin when it's ahead.

hmmm....

well, so, your saying you saw up to 80fps ?

doesn't that like, go against what was shown on THG?

jAkUp
05-04-04, 03:10 AM
Well, it was witnessed running at 60fps indoors, with all the options set on high.

Edit: 60 FPS

The question is was the farcry demo the exact same ones the others are using to benchmark the 6800U?

Different benchmark demos of the same game give different numbers.

05-04-04, 03:11 AM
Yes, as far as I know, it was a pre-recorded demo running in real time.

but below in your qoute you said 60fps indoors...

Does the X800XT have 2 shader units per pixel pipeline?

The ATI rep said that Doom3 will probably run faster on nVidia hardware, (isn't nVidia is paying ID millions of dollars?) The ATI rep says that their card will probably run Half Life 2 better, (and just maybe they are not paying Valve millions of dollars to do it... )

I like the word "probably" in both cases. :)

Wonder when can we buy X800XT or 6800Ultra i can't wait any longer :banghead:

Also you said it was running 8XAA. I thought it only supported 6XAA was that temporal AA and what did the quality look like?

jAkUp

but below in your qoute you said 60fps indoors...

My mistake, its 60 indoors

Some new info I forgot about. The card runs cooler 9800XT, and can run on a 250W PSU.

Well thats damn good news they could pull all that off and need low power and it even runs cooler.

wow thats pretty cool, aren't the clock speeds higher than the 9800XT?

jAkUp
05-04-04, 03:19 AM
He said the XT is is 500+/1000+ At that time they did not yet decide on the official clockspeeds.

The Pro he said was 475/1000

Jakup was it really using 8xAA or 6XAA?

jAkUp
05-04-04, 03:20 AM
They told us that it was 8X. I can confirm that is what they said.

betterdan
05-04-04, 03:24 AM
Ok thanks. maybe they were using 8x temporal AA. If not and it really was using 8XAA then that is outstanding.

I'm curious also about the overclocking if it runs so cool on low power. That crappy spanish site already tried overclocking the 6800U so maybe someone will try it in a review of the X800XT

jAkUp
05-04-04, 03:26 AM
Yea... I'm really not sure if it was temporal or full AA...

Jarred
05-04-04, 03:26 AM
so my next question is, how long untill the x800xt?

and, Nvidia's next step appears to be higher clock speeds...
