View Full Version : are you disapoointed with R420 performance?
I know I'm not disappointed by a card that will let me play all my games at 1280x1024.
Is that it? Even my 5900 will do that! These cards should be able to play all games at least 1600 x 1200 with some AA / AF. If they don't, then they're not worth a penny to me...

No, your 5900 will not play Painkiller, Far Cry, UT2004, and the rest of the good games coming out this year @ 1280x1024 w/ max details.

I think both cards rock.
But I think the 6800GT is for me this go around.
Cheaper price and great performance. :)
I was looking at maybe an X800Pro but
the price is way to high on them right now. :(

I'm not sure how anyone can be disappointed ith this generation cards from both Nvidia and ATI, but especially Nvidia! Common sense told you that ATI would have a fast card because it was based on the R3xx and they even clearly stated that their goal was 2 1/2 timesthe performance of the 9700 Pro accross the board. But nvidia pulled off a card that many times even triples the performance of their previous high-end. Basically no matter which previous gen. card you have there is now (well, almost now!) an option out there which will at least double your fps in almost every scenario. My X800 Pro basically doubles up my 9800 Pro and at the speeds I run it, it's usually closer to 2 1/2 times the speed........and the 6800U & X800XT are usually 20% - 30% faster than my new card! :bash:
The last time I saw such a jump in performance like this was almost a decade ago when 3D accelerators first hit the scene.
edit: oops, didn't mean to quote you DVS.

after seeing the ati cheats ... it makes you wonder.

It's a cheat because ATI did not disclose beforehand and that is deception. But ask anyone with an X800 if they have a problem w/ the IQ and all will say no because ATI's method is very good. Slightly better in some instances and slightly worse in others.
There are threads discussing this topic, but I'm sure you're trolling isn't wanted there either.

The only reason to be disapointed is if you were expecting the r420 to make the Geforce 6 6800 look like a geforce 4 Ti 4600 verses 9700 Pro.
I think both cards are pretty great and very even fort he most part.

I'm not disappointed in the speed but in the features. To me x800 is just a speed bumped R300 with not enough new stuff to warrant a purchase this round from me. I already have a 9800XT and can already game at 1280x1024 with at least 2xAA and 8x AF in 99% of the games I own.
I keep hearing that 1600x1200 high AA/AF is such a big deal but at that res you don't really even need much AA IMO.
I'm over 40 years old now and have been gaming since monochrome monitors were the only thing avail. So I'm perfectly happy gaming at 1024x768 with high AA/AF.
If I buy any card this round it will probably be the Nv40 but only if it looks like Ps3.0 is going to take off and IF the NV40 can handle it well enough. At this point I don't think either will happen. There simply won't be a big enough installed user base of Ps3.0 capable cards for developers to offer anything more than token support and I kind of agree with ATI that the current hardware can't handle PS3.0 well enough for it to make much of a difference.
Add to that the upcoming shift to PCIe and I think the best thing to do is wait this round out. Prices will be much lower in a few months and then we'll all have a pretty good idea of what to expect from PCIe.
Add to that the relative shortage of quality games lately and I really see no need to upgrade at this time.
