Which should I get? You guys seem pretty smart about those shader thingys.

Which will give me best at high resolutions? My monitor does 1600x1200@85htz. I love the looks of high AA/AF but it kills my ti4600. It was good in the day, but I think its time to retire it.

Just give me a little reason, please don't flame or try to trick me.

Thanks.

X800XT Platinum Edition or the 6800Ultra Extreme... either way you won't be sorry.

Anyone else wish these type of threads weren't allowed in this particular forum, they only serve one purpose.

x800xt look a better more stable desing, the 6800extreme is a great performer to and P.S.3 has not being enable yet so we dont know what kind of performance gains will give.

Today I will chosee x800xt

this thread is another thinly disguised version of a "nv40 vs r420" thread. lol

How much is the 6800u ext(extreme?) going to be? I have heard a lot of good stuff about fast it is.

I am a little worryd about what people say about ati's drivers though. I need stablility and my ti4600 is like a rock.

Nvidia has better & stable drivers .. theres no question about that .

ATI in the other hand , has a lot of issues with thier drivers .. ask me about it .
for ex. dont be surprised if a game ran w/o AA .. "its a driver issue & will get fixed soon " :retard:

Ok, a bit more detailed over-generalization.

AA
If you prefer high resolution (1600x1200) with greater than 4x AA, then ATI
If 4x is sufficient, then tie

AF
If you really favor AF at 16x over 8x, then ATI (currently)
If 8x is sufficient, then tie

Pixel/Vertex Shaders
Shader Model 2.0 performance - tie / slight advantage ATI
Shader Model 3.0 performance - Nvidia only.

Regarding SM3.0, nobody really knows how much of an impact it is going to have (could be quite significant, could be very small). If you are really on the fence, you might consider waiting until the Far Cry SM2.0/3.0 patch comes out and make a decision then.

Shadows
If you play lots of demanding games that use shadows heavily, then Nvidia.

Temporal AA
Impressive stuff, but heavily subjective. Likely to be a non issue in future games with low framerates. A nice plus for games with high framerates.

Open GL
Games which use open gl based engines usually perform better on Nvidia hardware.

very nice! Didn't mean to make anyone go through all that trouble. heeheheh.. now I do play some open gl, games, quake3, and jedi knight, but they play pretty darn good on my ti4600, would I be losing any of this performance with the x800? I may get doom3 later but it makes me think I might have poopie in my pants. :spank:

Come on the drivers on the x800xt are more mature that the drivers on the 6800u, there have being a few problems with the 6800 drivers in the reviews and 1 on the ATI x800xt.

No, the X800 series is only at a disadvantage in this case to cards within its own cycle: NV4X. An X800XT will absolutely crush a Ti4600 across the board as will the 6800Ultra.

Both the x800xt and the 6800U are going to be way better on those games than the ti4600 A HELL OF ALLOT BETTER!!!!!!!! :drooling:

Can you play Q3 or JKII @1600x1200 , 4xAA,8xA with a smooth framerate on your Ti4200 ??
well the 6800U can do it , the X800 can do it too .. but not as fast as the 6800U .
the same trend will go for D3 i reckon .
