Well.. I was looking through newegg.com and I saw them all in one DVD-RW/CD-RW drives for desktop computers and I'm wondering what kind of brand I should get. Please don't ask what my budget is.. because it doesn't really help me but waste my time.

I've been waiting for one of these before I buy a DVD writer. But if your not interested in backing up movies I'd go with a dual format writer with good speed on all types of media.

Sony DRU-700A

Price:
$199 list

Spec Data:
ATAPI (EIDE) interface; analog audio out, digital audio out controls; 8X DVD-R record speed; 4X DVD-RW record speed; 8X DVD+R record speed; 2.4X DVD+R DL record speed; 4X DVD+RW record speed; 40X CD-R speed; 24X CD-RW speed; 1.6 by 5.7 by 6.5 (inches, HWD).

Pros:
Dual-layer recording; terrific software bundle; good DVD-burning performance.

Cons:
Single- and dual-layer compatibility problems; DL media expensive and scarce; slow CD ripping.

Bottom Line:
Sony is way ahead of the curve with the first double-layer DVD recorder to ship in North America. The DRU-700A offers superior performance and functionality at a reasonable price, but it will still be some time until the DVD+R DL format itself can be considered wrinkle-free.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1596428,00.asp$200 still for a dual format DVD-RW? No thanks.

Those would work just as well and could be had pretty cheap. I just wish the cost of the media itself would go down a little bit.

It's DOUBLE layer as well as dual format. So you can copy the entire contents of a DVD-ROM movie. Of course only in countries where its legal. :angel2:

I retract my statement. But where can you even get media for that? I'd bet it costs as much as a DVD movie!

Those aren't really dual layer drivers are they? I didn't think so.

To clarify, they write 2 layers onto 1 side of a dvd, just like the ones you buy in shops. afaik, sony has the 1st and only one out right now, but i do know plextor and lg are releasing theirs in the next couple of weeks. The advantages of dual layer writing are pretty obvious, and for all the warzers they can now burn a dvd completely, with multiple languages, special features, et all.

However, many of the companies who currently have multi format dvd writers out have said that they can be used to write dual layer dvds with nothing but a firmware upgrade, but details on this have been sketchy from what ive seen.

Sry to tell you but as of right now burning dual layer dvd's can take an upwards of 45mins - almost an hr @ 2x speeds :( I'd say if you want a nice dual-format burner, grab the lite-on linked above. IMO it would be best to wait for the dual-layer format to mature with faster speeds and more availible, cheaper media.

My Pioneer DVR-A05 (with hacked firmware) continues to shine in spite of its sluggish speed ratings and lack of +RW support.

I'd be careful with that. In the specs it doesn't list a DVD-R DL burn speed. I think that's probably just a dual format burner as opposed to a legitimate dual layer drive. Remember, if it's too good to be true...

Dual Layers cost around $200 US here in hong kong. I think you are looking at a dual format or soemthing that reads dual layer dvds? normal dvds read dual layer right? I just bought a LG GS402b DVD writer :) 8X - and + R writing..shame the only cheap media I can get is 4X...and sometimes 2X (30 mins to burn a full DVD!!!!)

hehe
