Just got a BFG FX5900xt oc and thinking of flashing it with a 5950 bios.

Looking at the specs the xt seems to be an oc'ed 5900.
Does anyone know if it would kill the xt ?

Also looking at the memory bandwidth, it says 256 bit bus on the memory.
But from what info I gathered on that memory isnt a factor in flashing it.

Thoughts anyone?

At least on the memory overclock, it's merely a hyped up 5900XT. The 735 MHz effective speed of the BFG card is up from the 700 of a normal XT. The memory speed of the 5900 non-ultra is 850 MHz.

You could try flashing the XT to an Ultra, but you'd better make darn sure you have a good backup of the old BIOS because it probably won't work.

I believe your right , it would trash the card.
After reading more , I see the 5950 has 2.0 ns mem.
Theres no way I'd clock 2.8 to that without problems.

So memory speed matters but the amount doesnt.

You may find a 5950 BIOS with the mem clock modified to 800MHz somewhere else.

FYI, if your card's PCB is P177 other than P172, you'd better not flash it into 5950. Otherwise you may encounter black screen or you're not capable of installing the driver.

Yep, I'm gonna play it safe, no bios flash.
Thanks for the 800mhz recommendadtion though.

Not sure about the pcb # will look it up later, just for reference.
But it looks like flashing would shurly hose the card and as it was a major job just finding a 5900 (at a reputable place) I'll just keep it stock and be happy.

Thanks for the replies

i was going to flash mine, but in the luck of the draw of things... my 5900SE will OC to 444, 844. it will go more, but i am not to push my luck. you should try oc'ing and see how high she will go. if anything, jjst get a better fan for it and some ramsinks, if it doesnt have already. thats what i did

you should try oc'ing

Thanks Zoomy,
I will try coolbits later, right now I'm encoding DVD home video for a neighbor.
Eight hours of spanish soap opras :retard:
LOL

takes about four hours to encode 2 hours of video then compress to fit 4.7GB (4.3 GB actual size)
5 segments then I'm done !

I do plan on heat sink upgrade though, wanna be sure the card is 100%
before I mod it though.
Only thing about this card, replaced an fx5200 ultra, I miss the temp reading
thing.
But it smokes my 5200u, not that that was a bad card, but I am happy with
the performance of this one.

I have one of the 5900 non-ultras by Albatron with 2.2 ns memory, and flashed it to a 5950 (475c/950m) about 2 months ago. Its been doing great. I have tested at 500c/975m and it runs fine. Haven't gone beyond that.

Your right the XTs can't get the 2.8ns memory much past 800 mhz, but if you could find a modified 5950 bios it may work. You may want to check out Guru3D forums and also the following website:

Check the download section. Have fun :)

you should replace that fan with this..

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-110-107&depa=0

and if you have ram on the back of your card get some vga ramsinks also to keep everything cool. my SE is a crazy overclocker. 444 on the GPU? i love it and 840 out of SE ram? woohoo for me. that is what has kept me from getting anything different.

If I was looking for an 5900XT to OC I would gamble on the Leadtek,

It occassionally has the higher grade ram. As someone else mentioned some of the SE's do also. I have seen them clock default ultra without trouble.

I'm not good at gambling :)
I just prefer the warranty and support BFG has.
Havent seen any other company come close.
