View Full Version : Fx5900xt Oc

I've only had a couple days with this card but its already looking like a great deal.
Below are some reviews that I found to be accurate with my experience so far.
My system :
Thermaltake 480 PSU
Asus A7N8X D model Revision 2 Deluxe
Uber bios 1007
(I replaced the green power LED with a blue LED)
Athlon XP thoroughbred-B 2400+/266 (OC'd 11x200)
Thermaltake Volcano 7 HS, PC Toys 80mm adjustale speed fan
Buffalo 256MB PC3200 x3 Dual Channel Memory (Winbond ch-5) 768MB total
ATI TV Wonder PCI slot 5
120GB WD Pri-Master IDE
20GB Maxtor Pri-Slave IDE
Plextor 504a DVD+R/RW Sec-Master IDE
80GB Maxtor Sec-Slave IDE
(Yeah I know your not supposed to run a HD on same cable as Optical but I've
not had any problems)
Lian-Li PC82COM aluminum case
2 exhaust fans
On-board Soundstorm audio
Logitech PS2 Keyboard
Logitech PS2 mouse (replaced red LED with blue LED)
PC Toys 14" Cathode Black light
BFG Technologies FX5900XT OC
Win XP Pro SP1
First and foremost the xt is rock stable.
It runs what few games I have perfectly and smooth (my 5200ultra was a little jerky at times)
Black & White
Dark Reign 2
Emperor Battle for Dune
NFS High Stakes
NFS Hot Pursuit 2
All were run at 1024x768 85Hz
Theres a few more but these are a good category from old to fairly new
dx7 - dx9 and some opengl.
I do alot of encoding to vcd svcd and dvd also.
The xt does great here too.
As far as overclocking . . .
Coolbits got me to 438 core/754 mem , with 61.12 drivers
I've seen the reviews got higher with 5x.xx drivers so if you plan
on oc'ing more those would be better.
I prefer the 61.12 for editing video the 56.72 gave me problems with media player.
There are 2 things I didnt like about this card
(1) the memory heatsinks have a gap and dont completly sit on some of the memory modules.
(2) no temperature readout in the properties/settings, like the ultras have.
I plan on getting some better heatsinks anyway and replacing the fan also.
Anyway thats my take on the fx5900xt oc.
Time to go play !
Edit: installed the 56.72 forceware and was able to obtain
445 core/769 memory oc, not too shabby.
Ran all games 4x AA - 4x AF enabled @ 1024x768 85 32.
Smoooooooooooth as silk.

The 53.03 drivers have yeilded the best oc yet on coolbits
It has achieved 446 core/ 810 memory and its stable.
Memory bandwidth is at 25920 from stock 23520.
Hey cstring, do you think the gfx 5900XT run good with my other especs?
Here are my system especs:
Windows XP home
128mb+256mb (I only 128mb of ram right now going to buy a stick of 256mb)
40GB hard drive
I forgat all the other stuff (I am not at my home computer right now so When I get home I'll post my full especs) so do you think with all that it should run just fine right? ok reply please thanks :D

It should run good on your setup.
There are so many gotchas and variables though
that I could only chance a guess but,
If your power supply is good quality and everything else
is up to snuff, you should have a pretty good running system.
Found out the PCB is a p177h-4n so I'm glad I didnt flash the 5950u bios
Thanks solobird for the heads up on that !

Grabbed a bios image with nvflash 4.41
Read the file in X-Bios Editor 220.127.116.110
These are rebadged Chaintech GeForce SE cards
Not sure if I'm too happy about that.
ahh I see I'm going to check my power supply now :D I'll update latorz oh and those sites you gave for the reviews were awsomb do you have any other site with 5900xt Reviews? not the 5900xt oc the normal one :P
check www.8dimensional.com they list several links with reviews for many cards.

Go to guru3d forums, nvidia cards.
There are a ton of info there on all the xt models.
Also heres a good FAQ site
Ahh thanks both of you :P

your welcome, hamiko !
try to flash a modded bios with relax timing & increased volt, that will let you overclock higher. Also, it is good to hear that your card is running like Thai Airways.

Actually I modded an origional bios from your thread as per Knell2's
instructions. Thanks much Knell2 !
I knew previously that 810 memory clock would work but playing it safe I went with 804, it was a little to hot for my taste and Event Viewer gave me this error
Event Type: Error
Event Source: nv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 109
Time: 10:21:06 AM
Silent Running: rising temperature caused level transition: L2 -> L1
0000: 00 00 00 00 02 00 4e 00 ......N.
0008: 00 00 00 00 6d 00 aa c0 ....m.ªÀ

0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
so backed it down to 780 and all is well.
Granted it wasnt artifacting or locking up, but I prefer to play it safe.
Will reflash with the 804 when I get better fan/heatsinks.
Gonna go make a few more bios images with a variety of timings.
Thanks Fahim for starting the http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=29047
Thread and to Knell2 for the instructions ! It was a great help !
BTW the best part about oc'ing this way, you dont have to reload drivers
or reset coolbits.
I just finished a review on this BFG card... It will be up fairly soon... as said above, this card is a great deal, coming factory overclocked, and as always offering BFG's true lifetime warranty... Keep checking the front page, it'll be up in the next few days!!

Cool ragejg !
Can you give us a few snippets?
Like was yours equipped with 2.8 hynix, how far you oc'ed with coolbits,
did you try aftermarket cooling?
Cant wait to see your review now.
I'll tell you now.
I love overclocking.
A main selling point of this specific BFG card is #1. The lifetime warranty, and #2, the higher than normal clockpeeds, giving you an already over****ed card without messing with said warranty.
I decided to stick with the warranty and not alter the clockspeeds. I did however install coolbits to check my stock clocks to make sure I had the right BIOS.
I compared it to another 5900XT clocked @ 390/700, and a 9700 Pro, as that card presently occupies the same price range as a 5900XT even though they are from two different product cycles... Plenty of gamers who are looking for a card may buy new OR used, and the $140-$180 range is currently occupied by 256 bit memory interface equipped cards like the 5900XT, the R9700NP, R9700P, and R9800NP... So I felt my addition of an R3XX representative would help... :)
Oh, and this is a short to-the-point gameplay review... no synthetic benchmarks...

Thanks ragejg !
Looking forward to your review!
So am I...
how much should hte 6800NU retail for, cause im wondering what would be hte better buy, the 5900XT or the 6800NU... The 6800NU is more powerful, but which would be better in terms of (price/performance) ratio???

Hard for me to say zer0xp.
I'm a bit disappointed with this bfg card.
Some manufacturers are putting 2.5 and 2.2 memory
on thier cards.
2.8 is kinda lame (same as my 5200 ultra).
I'm at 760 on the memory though.
Thats max without any errors.
770 and higher the freakin throttle down kicks in.
If I had to do it over again I'd look for one with 2.2 memory.
On the other hand it runs good 4xAA 4xAF 1024x768.
I guess its like the old proverb "things could always be better"
05-26-04, 10:23 AM
Found this leadtech
$8 cheaper then the bfg 5900xt and 2.2 memory.
hey, cstring do you think I should get a Gfx 5900xt oc instead of a normal 5900xt? and the one you found from leadtek is it any good? Right now I am thinking of getting a Chaintech gfx 5900xt or that leadtek 5900xt oc I mean the oc is only like what? 20 bucks more expencive?
*edited* I checked the extras that come with the card, they are pretty good too :D it brings gun metal 2 and I cant really see the other one on top.
05-26-04, 05:29 PM
hamiko, the chaintech looks to have nice cooling but the leadtek
has the 2.2 memory.
Also my bfg listed as a chaintech so its quite possiable it has the lower quality 2.8.
IF it were me I'd go with the leadtek, I see some people that bought it there at newegg flashed it to a 5950 ultra.
Thats the ultimate (if they werent lying)
But like I said if it were me I'd go with the leadtek with the 2.2 memory.
I'm not sure that it will have 2.2 memory, just assuming from the references
at the bottom, It may be a gamble.
But IF it were me I would get the leadtek.
Ahhh I see yea, I think I'll go for the leadtek and those sites you gave with the reviews the benchmarks were pretty cool for the 5900xt oc so yea I think I'll go with the 5900xt oc
*EDIT* hey cstring btw do you have any reviews on the leadtek 5900xt oc?
*EDIT* nevermind ^_^; I found one, http://www.rbmods.com/Articles/Leadtek/Fx5900Xt/1.php
05-26-04, 08:11 PM
I would say you made the right choice.
Good idea, read as many reviews as you can find.
Look also through some forums, try googling leadtek fx 5900 xt problems, and see what you come up with.
I still believe (mostly because the memory) that that leadtek is the better of
the two cards.
Please post back after you get it, or if you get something else
and let us know how its going.
Good luck in your endevour!
thanks man =) I'll post right away if anything comes up!
*EDIT* found something , tought it might help with suggestions
