Alright, the ONLY game i play and have played consitently over the past 5yrs is Half Life and its mod Day of Defeat, No other games hold my attention longer than 2 weeks, anyway..Im looking to upgrade for HL2 and doom3. Now I ONLY game at 1024x768. Do i really need a 6800 or x800pro?. It really seems that both cards really only improve performance wise over 1280 resolution over the older generation of cards.

Edit: THe reason i ask is because im gonna either go with the new generation or go with a 9800pro since the prices getting low as hell, or a 5900

well, seeing as you only have a GeForce 4 Ti4200, yes i think it would be worth it, if only to crank up the AA and AF to max settings...BUT, you woulndt need the Ultra or Radeon XT, I would suggest getting the GT or the X80 pro, both would be PLENTY of horsepower for 1024x768. Get one of these and crank up the AA and AF to max, you'll be happy :)

Do you use AA or AF? If not then you will be CPU limited and have no need for the next gen cards... until games that are very heavily GPU dependent are released then the next gen cards will shine regardless of the resolution. (i.e S.T.A.L.K.E.R, everything maxed out at 800x600 almost requires a next gen card from what I am reading.)

i see no need to go about 4xaa/8xaf in my gaming world, i could live with 2xaa/8xaf even.

ermmm, i have a friend that if for example he actually were able to play halflife2, it ran pretty smooth on his geforce3 ti200... if you dont mind setting the graphics level down a bit, i would guess that you wont need a new card at all.

Can't wait ehh. Well, since I only have ~$250 to spend on a new video card im waiting for the new midrange. Hopefully I can find a good 256mb midrange card for that price.

I know the feeling! Normally, I don't suggest this but at the present I would recommend waiting a little longer...maybe to the end of next month? There could be something worth the wait. But If you can't I don't think you will be dissatisfied as that would be a significant upgrade for you.

Considering the resolution you play I might just get a 6800. The PS 2.0 improvements in the NV40 line and SM 3.0 are worth it. Also things like Ultra shadow will definitely impact Doom3. 299.usd. Personally I like full trilinear filtering through every stage of AF, and traditional trilinear selectable over 'optimized forms' ,to boot. Did I mention the video chip? 6800 should be a great series.

If you really want to be set awhile get the 6800GT.

To bad the Geforce 6800 non ultra will be limited to 128mb of memory. The affects of only 128mb are already becoming apparent in far cry @ 1600x1200 with 4xAA http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/far_cry_ati/page6.asp .

There's a 256MB version of the 6800 coming out as well, at least Gainward is offering one.

Nobody has asked this yet, so I guess I will...

WHY do you only game at 1024X768?

1) If it's because you have a 15" LCD that only does 1024X768 native, then I would say spend the $400 on a new LCD (or better yet a decent 19-21" CRT).

2) If it's because you have a 15" CRT and you can't go above 10X7 and still see the text in games, then see #1.

If you have a decent, larger display, and you are only playing 10X7 (and 2XFSAA), then the question still stands - why would you continue to use 10X7 even with one of the newer cards? WHY MAN, WHY? :screwy:
