Here is my system configuration:
redhat 7.2 with custom 2.4.16 kernel
dual p4 xeon with 2GB mem, scsi devices, etc...
nvidia 3123 driver
Nvidia Quadro4 750xgl adapter

My problem is with VT-Switching (virtual terminal, virtual console) and changing run levels once in run level 5 (X). I lose video!!

I can switch back to F7 and X comes back fine, or if I type ever so carefully in another run level, I can do an init 5 and come back to X. However, If I want to run in another run level besides 5, I have to reboot first.

Any solutions will be greatfully appreciated!
Thanks

Most of the time, VT switching issues stem from having rivafb support in your kernel. When you configured the kernel, under "Console drivers", then "Framebuffer support", did you say yes to both "Support for frame buffer devices (EXPERIMENTAL)" and "nVidia Riva support (EXPERIMENTAL)"? If so, go back and say no to "nVidia Riva support", as it interferes with the nVidia driver.

If you still want a high-res console, you can build "VESA VGA graphics console" (in the same place, under framebuffer support) directly into the kernel. That one will work with the nVidia driver.

I did not include "Support for frame buffer devices (EXPERIMENTAL)" ...so, all the subcatagories are greyed out. Any other suggestions, or should I include support for frame buffer devices and keep everything else to no?

Well if you don't have "support for framebuffer devices", then rivafb won't be even considered for compiling. So no, that doesn't appear to be the problem.

Is there anything revealing in your kernel logs? /var/log/messages is usually the file.

I found that if you are using the quadro4 in DVI mode, you will not experience the switching problem. The problem starts when you use DVI-dsub15 adapters and use the vga cable.
