The rendering of large crowd sequences using Artifical Intelligence (AI) software is a technique that has been used very effectively in a number of recent movies and is starting to appear in games.
This demonstration shows the vertex shader processing power of the X800 being used to render a large crowd of soldiers (1400 in total) running across a rocky terrain. All of the models feature weighted skinned vertices and are independently animated. The behavior of the crowd is simulated using AI.implant

Additional techniques used in this demo are ambient occlusion (used for shadowing) and of fluid simulation on the GPU (for the smoke).

If you use the Ruby wrapper, you can run the demo. However, everything is drawn and rendered except the troops. The shadows are there though. Runs well too -- 30-50fps on my Radeon 9700...with no troops of course.

Runs on my FX5900 Ultra with 3D-Analyze v2.34 and "NV40 fix forR420 Demos".

Runs at a few fps (do not have Fraps).

I bought mine the first day they started selling them online at bestbuy. I paid $430 total and was the 2nd person on rage3d and nvnews to get one :). Bestbuy online is sold out right now, but should be getting some in soon.

CompUSA's been selling them online--at $399--for weeks, and they're at every CompUSA and BestBuy I've run across in store so far, so methinks you should be able to find one without too much hassle.

What state are you in? Surely not Virginia.

I imagine region makes a difference, but assume the larger chains wouldn't be quite as affected. I'm in NJ, and they're pretty much all over here, NY, and PA. (At least on the "close to NJ" sides of those states. Hehe...)

Regardless, I don't think any state matters if you buy them online (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=313030&pfp=SEARCH). My friend got his two weeks ago, and waited all of two days for it to get shipped to him.

They cost over $700 here in australia, and I'm not sure weather I can justify the cost.

Check the Beyond3D forum, someone is providing a hacked shader file to run the demo properly with visible soldiers....

Make sure you edit the config file to run the demo at your native rez if you've got an LCD. All ATI's demos default to 1024x768. I had to knock down AA from 4x to 2x on Ruby to get her to run well at 1280, but this demo runs great w/ both 4x AA and 16xAF. The difference between no AF and non-native rez to how I have it now is night and day. Also remember to change your aspect ratio to 5:4 from 4:3 in the config if your native is 1280x1024.
