Quick question - does ATI have the same timing problems (ie reverting to default 60mhz when launching a game) with Win 2000/XP as Nvidia did? (Not sure if this was a Windows prob or Nvidia problem).

If so, does the ATITool have refresh overrides?

I'm hoping the card comes via FedEx today! :smoking2:

EDIT: BTW - I have a CoolerMaster 201 case (read: well ventilated, plenty of cooling/fans) so I will conduct some o/c tests with the x800pro - I actually have a couple heatsinks that I could use - I'm nauseatingly prepared for this aren't I? Sick, I know.....now if you could just open up those other 4 pipes we would be in business

The refresh rate issue is an issue with the OS (2K/XP), but to answer your question, yes the problem exists.

I don't know about ATiTool since I use RefreshForce.

I think there are a couple of tutorials on how to get those 4 pipes back so to speak. I think Rage3D has a thread on it, but you may want to google it for more information.

Smuv,

I think I may have seen the same article but they were claiming that there were too many artifacts incurring, not sure.

Anyways, thanks for the info on the refresh. I know that most all the newer Nvidia drivers include a refresh override setting ala the old "NVRefreshTool". I'm pretty sure the problem was exclusive to OGL, but I could be wrong.

Anyways, I'm assuming that ATI or the ATITool most likely has the same thing...?

Yes Ati Tray Tool can force the refresh you desire,

I used it on the CoD Demo. No I did not OC the card for Painkiller, it isn't really necessary.

Yeah, ATI has the same thing but at one point it didn't work with everything. Just use refreshforce if you find you have problems. I'm not sure if they fixed it with the last 2 releases since I haven't tried them yet.

ATI's refresh rate override is found on the displays tab in the CP. Once you get there just click on the button for your monitor and you'll see the override option.

These are some CoD shots from the Demo. They are 1280x1024, 4xAA/8xAf, which is actually what I game at most often. They aren't that great but they will give you an idea. I rushed it just to snag a few. I reduced them in size for the 56k guys. FPS was 96-273.

"Not that great" - ? :screwy:

Looks awesome to me - maybe because I only know the game with a G4 Ti 4400 - have you noticed any glitches though (in ogl)?

ED: CoD looks really bright compared to my Geforce4, is your gamma turned up?

And sorry to bother you again, but you mentioned that I should reinstall DX9b before I load the cat drivers, right? Is this because I'm changing platforms (NV vs. ATI)? Or do you do this everytime you change drivers? May I ask what benefit comes from it? I never did it with NV and I never had a problem. Here's how I used to update: Add/Remove old drivers. Install "Default VGA adaptor" (otherwise xp tries to load a driver from the cab files on reboot). Driver cleaning utility. Reboot. Load new drivers.

Would this be ok to do with the cats?

Would you recommend reinstalling Farcry as well?

Thanks again

It is possible I turned gamma up. Honestly I don't remember. I have noticed no problems in the CoD demo or NWN. I think reinstalling dx9 before the cats would be the best bet. That is opinion though. I would not do it every time there after with new cats unless you notice odd behavior from them. Nothing wrong with the way you do it. I say to use safe mode so when you clean you get all the old drivers. If you have the system fully loaded it my be using some that you could miss. In addition you can defeat networking in safe mode without unplugging your cable modem if you don't want your machine talking to MS Ati and God knows who else.

The thing to remember with the cats is the control panel and driver are seperate. You should install the driver then the panel and reboot. You do not need to reboot after each one, I have found it best to put them together before the reboot.

Do the cats your way. It should be fine, again I suggest you remove your old drivers and clean in safe mode.

I would not re install Far Cry. Unless you have the urge to do so.

hey man thanks again for the tips - along with farcry, I'm going to try Pandora Tomorrow, CoD, and Max Payne 2 for eye candy, I remember Morowind was pretty taxing on my Geforce too, so I'm going to load that as well and see what happens - have you tried the codemasters demo of soldiers: heroes of WWII? Looks interesting

has anyone recorded this same thing using a NV40 yet?

edit - oops missed some of the other posts -

This is regarding the shimmering in Far cry - I seem to recall someone saying they saw it on a NV based board. Can anyone here confirm/deny this please?

Thanks.
