View Full Version : X800 filtering
Interesting new thread at beyond 3d

ati optimizations showing in movement, texture shimmering, texture aliasing
this is the default setting(showing more texture aliasing)
http://www.gaeugf.ch/ted/mp2_AF_op_off.avi
disabled the AF optimizations and that's also how it looks on the r9800

wow the default settings are terrible, for those of you that don't see it, look at the ground several inches higher on the screen in front of the guy, when the mipmaps change its all crackly with default settings, then watch the second demo, clean, crisp and clear
Didn't know it was that bad. :(
Is it really that weird 'in motion'? I'm getting my card tomorrow so i guess i'll see for myself then.
I know, i updated my sig a little too early. (crazy)
What's the deal with them suppressing how to force true trilinear especially if it can be done with a registry tweak? Is ATI the one really trying to stop the info from being shared or is it just B3D Edit: or option 3...see below. ;)

Here's a 'problem' game for the radeon's traditionally as far as AF goes, Mafia.
These are two shots of the street showing AF and depth of field. They were done with all high quality settings, 1280x1024 4xAA through the game and 8xAF through Ati tray tools with the quality tri option selected.
They are big PNGs. You tell me, horrid?
EDIT: Didn't have tray tool on. Here they are corrected.

tEd, the thread starter, has indicated that he does not want to reveal the setting(s) required to turn off adaptive filtering. More than once he has been asked about the actual setting. Speculatively speaking, his may be due to potential "retaliation" by ATi (loss of future NDA opportunities for instance). I would doubt that ATi could retaliate since the X800 Pro is actually publicly available. I'm sure someone else can and will figure it out given time (iXBT anyone?).
As for the movies themselves, it looks like too aggressive of an LOD is being applied, leading to what looks like texture aliasing. I have seen this with Unreal Tournament on a 9800 XT or Pro. Simply set the CP to App Pref. Then set AF ingame via the unrealtournament.ini (MaxAnisoTropy IIRC) and enter a LODBias <= 0. You'll see the same effect on walls and floors on various maps. To work around this in UT, use CP AF or Radlinker to force Tri AF and leave the LODBias at 0.
FWIW at first glance, this looks like a valid bug in the adaptive algorithm, and I hope he sends the results to ATi in a timely fashion.

no that's just me being stubborn for now ;)
seriously there are other reasons why i don't like to reveal such reg tweaks which is not in anyway related to ati.

tEd, thanks for replying and clarifying. :)
Thanks for the info SmuvMoney and tEd. I guess I should edit my post and add a 3rd option...tEd being stubborn for now. :)

Yes, well those mip map transistions are apparent. One of those odd situations where Trilinear Optimisations dont cut it.
This occurs occasionally with Nvidias Brilinear too. Well. I dont want to hear the argument. "It cant be seen" anymore. Same straw argument against Brilinear for the Nv3x series, Some people can see it, Some people cant, Should have the option to turn it off,
I am also criticising Nvidia for still not giving me the option of the Nv3x series too.

yeah, but I'm wondering what other excuse people will cough up next.
I'm not gonna care as long as ATI offers the option to disable it, and benchmarks are viewed accordingly.
