seems like AMD's current plans are to release Barton sometime next year as had previously been speculated by people here. (Claw)Hammer also 1H next year at 2GHz or higher with a 3000+ rating. AMD will provide motherboards for the debut just like they did for the original Athlon.

AthlonXP 2700+'s should be here soon. they are being mass produced as we speak. 2800+ are not being mass produced yet.

I think I'll be going barton + nForce2
I reckon the Hammer's not going to be that much faster than the barton in 32bit, and its going to be a while before 64bit is supported. Then again, it makes you wonder whether AMD will last that long, as they seem to be hemoraging money these days.

they weren't exactly that profitable before the Athlon chips came out either. in fact, they had been losing money for quite some time.

anyway, Hammer's core should be 5-10% faster clock for clock than either the current AthlonXP or Barton(i forget). additionally, the integrated memory controller is supposed to increase performance by up to 20% because of reduced latencies.

AMDs stock just rose quite a bit I guess because they foresaw a return to profitability next year due to something like $350 million in costs cut
Apparently due to the partnership with UMC.

I dunno, and if thats not coherent or correct, lemme know.

Seemed coherent to me, but then I swear I just saw that "new thread" button down there go from its usual color to red and back

A 1333 may not seem all that much slower than an Athlon XP, but the core changes are nice....you'd definately notice, moving to a higher and AXP.
Since you can undoubtedly just plug a new processor in, I'd say go for it.

But, I'm not preaching, do what you like.
I don't know when PCI Express will actually be used, or I might want it too
