Will JC's Next engine have OGL PS 3.0 Equivalent?

EDIT: I mean do you guys think that it will? will Open GL have the shader capabilities equal to DX in a few years time?

Of course it will...and beyond. These big-name games tend to take 5 years from beginning to end. There was no such thing as fragment program (PS 2.0) when Doom 3 development began, but support was added when it came about. Similarly, their next game will almost assuredly use features from a PS version that is not even available right now. PS3.0 is likely to be the minimum requirement for that game just like register combiners and stencil shadows (technology that was new 5 years ago) is the minimum for Doom 3.

And FYI, OpenGL has always supported new features earlier than D3D. A vendor can make an OpenGL extension that is ready as soon as they release their card, but D3D support requires that MS make an update, which happens on MS's time schedule.

Well put Zeno. BTW, I've not really kept up on JC's next game engine. Is there actually one in the works? If so, what do we know about it so far? I thought he was focusing more on this venture (http://www.armadilloaerospace.com/n.x/Armadillo/Home). :)

I've heard very little. Only that JC has started researching which techniques to use, it won't be a sequel, and they don't want it to take as long as Doom3 has. I should probably correct my 5 year estimate above to something more like 2-3 years. Same arguments still apply, though. Who knows, maybe id will be competing head to head with Unreal Engine 3 games? Good times for us graphics enthusiasts :)

Absolutely, that's what it comes down to really. Good times. :afro:

"As DOOM 3 development winds to a close, my work has turned to development of the next generation rendering technology. The GeForce 6800 is my platform of choice due to its support of very long fragment programs, generalized floating point blending and filtering, and the extremely high performance."

Seems JC isnt really interested in vertex shaders huh?

What version of PS & VS that Doom3 engine will use ??

Open GL fragment Shaders, and vertex programs. They have the same capabilites (perhaps a higher max instruction count) as DX's PS 2.0 and VS 2.0
