Forget about both the Matrox and the ATI.

The first will work right out of the box, but the performance will be low. The second has abismal performance compared to the windows drivers (both with the gpl drivers and the ATI's ones).

Now, if you can afford it, the best bet is the Quadro FX 3000. In any case, you have to download the NVIDIA linux drivers to be able to use 3d acceleration. Once you have installed the NV drivers, you'll have almost the same performance level of the windows drivers. You won't be disappointed.

At work, I use a GF FX 5600 and a FX5700Ultra under RH 9 w/ NV drivers for our scientific visualization needs, and they work flawlessly. A Quadro FX 3000 would be great, 'xcept we can't afford it (or, better, should I ask for one, they'd prolly make me pay for it ;)).

Btw, what do you plan to use it for ? CAD ? CAM ? Scientific Viz ? Game dev ? Modelling ?
