Spybot and Adaware work well but there's some spyware that they don't detect. I hope spyware becomes illegal everywhere. If it's illegal in one place that won't work since there would be another place where you could get spyware.

I'm surprised it doesn't break the DMCA in some way.

Thats because the DMCA was created to protect the profits of businesses, not the privacy of consumers.

You are right the DMCA only applies when hacking software/hardware results in copyright infringement.

Try HiJackThis! - using this along with AdAware I have pretty good success - esp with some of those Borwser Hijackers that reset your Homepage and Searchpage everytime you restart your computer.

I like to run CWShredder, Hijack This!, Adaware and then Spybot on machines with lots of spyware. Sometimes multiple runs of Adaware and Spybot are required.

My god, what sites do you guys go to that you need to do so much?

I run adaware every few days and I never have any problems with my computer. I havent had anything other than the normal tracking cookies in a LONG time.

Probably Porn and Warez. They are the worst offenders of Spyware.

Ever since completely dropping Microsoft products from my web browsing and email components, I've been spyware free. I'm never going back, even after SP2.

Point me to a distro that will pick up my Centrino Wireless card in my laptop, and I'm immediately there.

I would, but most games are M$'s DirectX and only run on Windows.

Just like CaptNKILL, I never have trouble with spyware.

What I've noticed is that spyware/browser hijackers tend to be a large problem for individuals who aren't computer savvy and those unfortunate persons with whom they share computers.

During one of my final semesters of college, I had a rather witless roommate whose reckless browsing, pop-up clicking, and software-installing habits kept me constantly busy cleaning my OS for the day's most malicious strains of spyware. (po) The best protection against becoming infected by a hijacker is common sense. But even if you know better than to click on any installer dialogue that may pop up, you'd better hope that anyone you share your system with has the same level of restraint.

That's the ticket. Most of the spyware out there is written for exploits in IE and Outlook/OE. I've been pushing many of my less tech-savvy friends to at the very least get Firefox or Opera and stop using IE.

If it's illegal in one place that won't work since there would be another place where you could get spyware.

Theres a law being drafted in Utah that is attempting to do exactly that, and afaik a senator from there is attempting to push it to the federal level.

I'm surprised it doesn't break the DMCA in some way.

No it would not, not by a long shot. The DMCA is written to prevent the circumvention of digital locks. Spyware does not do this in any way shape or form. Spyware acts much more like a trojan than a crack for a peice of software.

The above law I mentioned is attempting to legally classify spyware into the same category as viruses/trojans, even though it doesn't necessarily sabotage your computer (although many times it has that effect.) They will class them all as "malware."

You want to know the best way to protect yourself from spyware though? Don't download every god damn program that has the word "free" written on it, and if any website requires you to download a special client to view their content, just don't view their content. I can't stress these enough, and people say "oh yeah, I be carefull, blah blah blah" yet they still go and do it anyways. I haven't had any spyware problems on my own personal computer, yet every other day I find new random sh!t on my downstairs computers that everybody else uses, and they all seem to believe that it isn't their fault, and that spyware just "happens."

I have my own computer work business, and that's exactly what I reccomend to most of my clients. I do the usual Spybot and AdAware gig, but also say that if they really want to get rid of most of it for good they're going to need to drop at least IE.

Thanks, HijackThis got rid of this one annoying toolbar. I was afraid of the title of the software at first...
