View Full Version : Disabling SP2's built in anti-virus

Anyone found a way to do this? I've got my own anti-virus software, which I'd prefer to use for that task...
Looked around, couldn't find a way. Can find a way to disable alerts to it, but not the thing itself. Did a google online, and though there is mention that there will probably be a way to do this, no one seemed to have the method. Am I missing something here?

Not on the interface here. For the anti-virus there is no button whatsoever I'll post the window below. If it was that simple, I would have found it :D Also tried a Google on this subject, and found many references to people saying they don't want it, replies that there should be a way to get rid of it, but as to how...nadda
I can turn off the alerts via another link in there, but I want to disable it (though keep the firewall) altogether. If it ran as a service and I knew what it was, it could be disabled via computer management console as well, but I and a friend who was over here tonight both looked, and couldn't find it.
BTW, that link under it, only gives some blurb about it (text only) no options to enable or disable.

You can disable the security center in the start menu's "Control panels/Administrative tools/Services" menu. Look for "Securty Center", and disable it.
You can still enable the firewall without security center. Check just your options in your control panel. Hmm. Maybe the Home edition of WinXp is different. In winXp pro, I can choose a virus software and turn off the Sp2 virus software as an option. I leave security center disable though.

This is winXP Pro. Haven't really looked at home. This is from a MSDN CD, though I don't think that should make a different.
Yes, I've seen the Security Center service listed, but is this just for the GUI and these other things are seperate, or will the AV go away disabling this. How can I know it did? THX

Your image doesn't have the button I am talking about. Perhaps you need to disable your anti virus first then it will appear? I havn't installed a 3rd party anti-virus program so my display doesn't look like yours.

I had also tried that, and nothing changed in this. I've pretty much turned security center upside down... bleh Nothing seems to come up which is relevent in a Google search either; though this doesn't totally surprise me.
Back when my MSDN subscription (professional level), I used to get the release candidates, and at various times betas...and as you can imagine everyone else was learning what was going on with these changes, right along with one's self.

I didn't think SP2 had antivirus software. I don't use antivirus because it slows my computer down too much and my security center says I don't have antivirus installed.
I think sp2 might be looking for a standard antivirus and list it along with info about whether it is up to date or not.

Much of the thing with add ons in security center is that Microsoft has gotten a certain reputation wrt worms and the infection of Windows boxes. There was also mention of bundling an adware removal program... As good as this can be for some users, others don't need it from Microsoft...and would like a choice of using their own.
Further browsing, there is some mention of other products showing up, but I tried disabling McAffee's automatic protection, and it still said it's on. Given someone else here mentioned an option for turning this off (and some of what I noticed when I googled on the issued a couple days back)

I'm pretty sure MS is just scaning for other virus protection software already on your computer and displaying information about it. I think MS is trying to make it simple to configure all security settings include antivirus. I know they had to work with norton and others it get it to work. So there is nothing to turn off.

Yes, it just searches for the most common AV programs and intregrates into the Security Center. SP2 DOES NOT have it's own Anti Virus Prog. (mag)

Did you experience any problems with your mouse cursor after loading this new build?
As for the mouse movement thing, did notice that at first, but successfully fixed it by unchecking Control Panel/Mouse/Pointer Options/Enhance Pointer Precision.

No I dont experienced any problem with mouse cursor on build 2162, the cursor movement is just the same way it did on XP RTM and SP1. :)
