How important is optical zoom for digital cameras? I've been looking at digital camera's and most have digital zoom only. I've been checking out these cameras:

canon a310 - 5.1x digital zoom only
sony dsc-p32 - 3.2x dig. zoom only
canon A60 - has 3x op. zoom but its only a 2mp camera.
Fuji A330 - has 3x op. zoom but only 1.6x digital zoom.

Im going camping with my family next week and want to post pics on the web. Will pics taken by a regular camera look better than the ones from digital cams when printed? Also, what resolution should i take pictures at if i want them printed at a regular picture size?

Optical zoom is zooming in its truest sense, like when you use binoculars. Digital zoom is like zooming in on a picture in paint, it just increases the size of the pixels, and doesnt really zoom in. If possible get a high optical zoom camera, also check the megapixel rating on the camera sensors, usually buried away in the tech specs, and look for a true megapixel rating, not a so called effective megapixel rating. E.g. a 3.1 effective megapixel camera could be as little as a true 2.1 megapixel camera, so while it says 3.1 megapixels, its not.

Forget about digital zoom. Digital zoom only means that the camera scales only the central portion of the ccd image up to the desired resolution. It's like the 9600 dpi of most scanners, that is, crappy.

Optical zoom, on the other hand means that the camera has a real zoom lens, and uses all the information from the ccd for the final image.

Btw, I see you ain't considering Nikon cameras. I suggest you to take a look at them, too.

Oh, another thing, take a look at these two big stores in NYC :

Adorama (http://www.adorama.com/) and
B & H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/)

they're the biggest NYC stores (maybe even the US biggest ones). Being in photography, I know quite a number of fellow photographers, and they've always been more than satisfied with these two stores....
