A friend of mine has just given me a PC with a 128Mb Creative FX5600. I recently bought a PNY FX5700 LE for my own aged machine. Which is the "better" card, in terms of speed, features, and reliability? Are there any benchmarking figures out there ... or anybody who might be able to tell me whether its worth my while swapping them over?

The 5700LE is faster at stock and overclocks to non ultra speeds easy. So yes, change them out ASAP

How much faster is the 5700LE ... in terms of say, fps in Far Cry. Also, there's the question of reliability ... the PNY smacks a little of cut corners: Drivers on a CDR, and a manual of such low paper quality you could hang it in squares in the toilet! Does build quality have any bearing on performance in these cases?

Hmmm.. I usually don't recommend PNY, since they had tons of problem with their geforce4 cards, blowing caps, etc.

But from what I hear their newer lines are built better. And yes, a 5700LE is better than a 5600. A 5600 is not a very good card at all...

in terms of overclocking the 5600 is probably the best card for doing it with in the fx line.

i got my msi fx5600 from 325/550 to 380/660

hmm, i'd have to disagree with you on that one mullins.. I'd say the FX 5900 is the best when it comes to overclocking... but anyway, back on topic - the 5700 LE seems to have default clocks of 250mhz core and 400mhz memory, much lower than the 5700 NU's clock speeds of 425mhz core and 550mhz memory...
I say this because i think a lot of you are comparing the 5600 to the 5700 NU, and that's not the case here.
This is all the info i can provide, and i cant really help you decide which one, but hopefully other forum members can gather some info from my post and help you.
Good luck.

according to this chart:

the FX5600 and FX5600Ultra have higher clocked GPU and memory (more memory bandwidth) than the FX5700LE. If you told me you had the regular FX5700, I'd tell you to slap it in and overclock... but since the FX5700LE only has 200mhz memory, I would recommend keeping the FX5600 instead.

Thanks for the advice. For the time being I'm going to stick with the FX5600. I might sell off all my old PC components and treat myself to a higher spec card.

fx6000 has only 1 VS unit whereas fx5700s has the full 3 VS units. Also FX5700 has ultrashadow feature. I think the FX5700 has extra FP units at the expense of ALU units.

Interesting details MUYA ... but what does this mean in laymans terms. Will I, for example be able to increase my view distance in Morrowind with the FX5700LE ... or perhaps turn the details up on Far Cry a notch. My CPU is ok ... it's a P4 2.4Ghz, and I've got 1gig RAM, and a reasonable motherboard with hyperthreading.

You'll get better overall fps with the 5700 and be able to crank up the eyecandy more.

Maybe you could sell both cards and buy a nicer card for the money like a 5900 series card or a 6800NU hehe.

Actually I dunno as gaming with low end mainstyream cards will never give much satisfaction on demanding games such as morrowind. Best to get yourself a new purchase , a new generation like mainstream nv40 derivative or x800 derivative maybe. You will have more power to play demanding games w/o a lil more comfort.
