If anyone has both mentioned in title, could you run it in perfect @ 1280x960 4xAA 4xAF, give me a fraps report for the black death track (over 2 mins) and post a screenie please :)

Most of the reviews I have read do not test IL2, and those that did, did not use perfect mode.

If you could also state the card and clocks if not stock as well as CPU.

TIA

I think Firingsquad has done investigations with IL2-FB . IL2-FB is part of Brandon's benchmarking suite. Head on over there.

Yes, but not in the perfect mode :(
And there are no screenies, I would like to see how it compares with the ATI cards in framerate and IQ, as I managed to find someone who had an X800PRO to test for me, however I can't find someone with a 6800 for comparison.
I am undecided as to which card to get, IL2 being my main game plays a large part in my decision, and £400 is a lot to spend, hence the research.
I am beginning to feel like this guy (mag) :D

If you can wait till Best Buy ships their pre-orders (which is where I have mine ordered), I'll bench it for you with those settings. This should be around the 28th through the 4th of July sometime.

hmm. I think x-bit labs and guru3d use il2 in their benching suite

What do you mean by black death track?

I just got a P4 LGA775 system up 'n running last night with a PCI-e 6800 Ultra and can give IL-2: FB Aces a whirl with Perfect landscape (OpenGL) for you if you want. Just don't know what the black death refers to.

The black death track is the title of one of the viewable track files within IL2 FB.
Sorry if this sounds condacending (sp?) but I do not know how much you know so I will explain step by step.
Hopefully you already have fraps, if not you can download it here:
http://www2.fraps.com/FRAPS221.EXE

Fire up fraps, then fire up IL2-FB.
When the menu first appears, click the play track button and scroll down until you see one listed as TheBlackDeath.ntrk
Highlight this and click play.
There will be a timer appear in the bottom right of the screen, the usual method of benching is to start fraps at 00.05 (5 seconds in to give things time to settle) by default F11 key starts fraps logging and you will see the fps counter disappear.
just watch the track video until the timer reaches 02.05 (2 minutes 5 seconds) then hit the F11 key again (the fps display will re-appear) and then you can press esc, and exit the game.
If you go to the folder were fraps is installed there will be a file called frapslog, open this with notepad and there will be a listing of time and frames along with minimum fps, average fps and max fps those are the figure I am after.
If you could include a screenshot from anywere that shows water and land together that would be most helpfull too.
Sorry once again if you knew most of this, just wanted to be clear in case you didn't :)

BTW sounds like you have a nice set-up there, what speed CPU did you get ?

I benched the IL2 demo... but not forgotten battles

I figured as much but didn't want to assume. I'll give that demo a whirl as soon as I can.

It's a review system from Intel. P4 3.4EE, 1 GB of 533Mhz DDR2, 925 motherboard, etc.

Man, that is some setup to test :)
I look forward to seeing the IL2 scores, thanks :D

OK, just got around to running that benchmark for you. At 1280x960 with 4x AA/AF I got low 16, high 78, and the average was 30.9. I gave the track a few seconds before telling Fraps to start recording and stopped right at the 2:00 mark. All in-game settings were maxed out (landscape was set to perfect), though sound was disabled (on board HD Audio from Intel, which I have no idea how much CPU it utilizes since I just got this system running last night).

Thank you Ahriman6.
Which driver set did you use ?

Sorry to be a pain, but could you re-do the test but with no AF applied, just 4xAA ?

Many thanks.

I used the 61.45s. I'm leaving for work in a few minutes but I'll try to rerun the test again tonight if I get the chance. I've got about 80 benchmarks to run for this Intel review and I hope to finish up this weekend, so I'll try to get to it as soon as I can.

You wil have to post linkage for the review when done ;)

OK, finally got the review finished and ran this benchmark. The score was so much of a surprise that I ran the original 4x AA/AF again just to double-check. Anyways, the new test scores were 23/45/85, with the average jumping from 30 to 45 when AF was disabled. Worth noting is that the 61.45's global image settings are at high quality and the trilinear and AF optimizations are disabled.

Thanks for that.
Yes, AF takes a big hit in this game, I discovered that on my 9800 pro.
I was averaging 25fps on that test with 4xAA 2xAF (performance). When I set it to 4xAF (quality) I was hitting av of 15 !

Here are some numbers from my system.

2004-06-27 05:48:10 - il2fb
Frames: 3180 - Time: 120445ms - Avg: 26.402 - Min: 8 - Max: 57

2004-06-27 05:51:03 - il2fb
Frames: 3592 - Time: 120902ms - Avg: 29.710 - Min: 15 - Max: 57

The top is OpenGL and the lower DX. This is 4xAA 8xAF.

Also at Bjorn3D we only test with real systems. Meaning, we are hooked to the internet, sound is on, Antivirus is running, ICQ or IM is on, TroganHunter is on and alot of other crud like INCD for burning DVD and CD-ROMS.

This was done on my system which is in my signature. If you want pictures e-mail me and say SCOTT IL2-Guy. This will make sure I catch it thru the spam filters.

e-mail, scott@************

I do not think Mike C. would want me hogging his bandwidth with screen shots.

Also I spend alot of time on the flight sim sites and WWII sights. Maybe someday we can fly with each other, I am always Dogfighting in IL-2 ACE.

Can't wait for the war againts the Japanese!!

This time I turned AF off and only used 4xAA.

The top is D3D and the Bottom is OpenGL

2004-06-27 06:06:53 - il2fb
Frames: 3713 - Time: 118640ms - Avg: 31.296 - Min: 15 - Max: 57

2004-06-27 06:09:43 - il2fb
Frames: 4126 - Time: 119014ms - Avg: 34.668 - Min: 14 - Max: 58

I hope this helps you. As far as boards go so far, between ATI and NVIDIA I have many of both. This round as far as drivers and future games it goes to NVIDIA.

My biggest reason for knockin ATI, is drivers they blame alot of screen's in IE going away because I have Java installed. I said what the hell is up with that? I have Java and NVIDIA drivers and no problems.

Did you test with AF/tri optimisations on or off?

Thanks Scott.
Sorry I hadn't replied sooner, but NV News mailer seems to have forgotten to mail me of replies.
Have you tried the bench of blackdeath in "perfect" mode (available in OGL only), thats the one I am most interested in. (1280x960x32 OGL 4xAA 4xAF).
I dont mind AF optimisations being on.
Also the same on the track P38 vs Ki84 would help too, if you can spare the time :)

I hope this helped.

So Bartflaster, based on these numbers, which card is better for IL2? 6800 or Radeon?
