Says here we just need DX9c for it to work.

The game can support SM3.0 doesn't necessarily mean there're SM3.0 shaders in it.

AFAIK the 1.2 patch is still the missing piece of the SM3.0 shader puzzle for FarCry.

1.2 has some SM3.0 shaders in it.

Exactly, what that Inq article seems to imply is that SM3.0 shaders exist in the 1.1 patch...I don't believe that to be the case at all.

The article says that SM3 is in 1.1 but not active untill dx9c is installed. I'm sure a few people here have dx9c that can comment on it.

I have DX9.0c, and I ripped the shaders used in 1.1 by 3danalyzer, there's no even one piece of SM3.0 shaders.

I have DX9.0c, and I ripped the shaders used in 1.1 by 3danalyzer, there's no even one piece of SM3.0 shaders.I've not used 3Danalyze but I also have DX9.0c (XP SP2) and there's absolutely no visual difference and any performance improvements are farily negligible (one would expect to see with marked performance improvements if actual SM3.0 were at play).

???? :screwy: What are you basing that assumption on? Farcry AFAIK has very limited PS2.0 usage.. WTH are they going to change in there to use PS3.0?
Someone with much more HLSL knowledge than me (I have 0) should make a benchmark with a scene showing multi-pass PS2.0 and then also have the ability to switch that same scene to PS3.0 and show us the performance difference.

If the delta was that great and not a checkbox feature I would think the Mighty Nivida would already have one out and screaming about it from the hill tops?? Anyone disagree? :lame:

Are you comparing 1.1 and 1.0 or 1.1 and 1.2?

I don't have 1.2...do you? :)

EDIT: But no, I was comparing only 1.1 with/without DX9c

Oh, well then, I dont have 1.2 either. According to my friend who has 1.2 and DX9.0c, using SM3.0 can improve the performance up to a few percent in particular scenes, the overall improvement is neglectable though.
Davik Kirk made a demonstration in Japan recently, during which they showed the difference between SM3.0 and SM2.0:
demo running in NV3x mode, but we dont know the card they used(roughly 20FPS):

same demo running in NV4x mode, surely a NV40 was used(roughly 60FPS):

Fuad is sometimes somewhat confused. Why did he decide to write only today about the FarCry 1.1 patch although it has been released weeks ago?

The 1.1 patch does not include SM3.0 shaders but only support for SM3.0. The 1.1 patch itself adds no SM3.0 effects into the game.

Goes to show how stupid some of the Inquierer articles can be. Telling everyone there should be a big performance increase, unless the official dx9c will have something the beta dosent.

Wow that tea cup thing has to be a complete joke... They probably ran an NV30 in NV3x mode against an NV40 in the NV40 mode. No wonder it gets 3x the performance! I guess 3x the performance isn't really that bad though considering the NV40 is probably running everything at much higher quality than the other mystery card which more than likely had to be hacked up to run at that 20 FPS.

Agghhh, what am I talking about? It really doesn't even matter anyways... There's no way you can connect any type of performance increase or anything from those 2 pics.

I have done a lot of digging around on Far Cry information which is hard to find since Crytek doesn't talk to their community much and this is what I have so far:

The 1.2 patch is supposed to add virtual displacement mapping and will be usable by R300+ ATI cards and NV30+ Nvidia cards. It will also add other tweaks and fixes.

The 1.3 patch is apparently supposed to add HDR support also usable by both cards.

The SM3.0 patch that is announced may or may not be part of the other two above as there is no decent information about it. Also, according to an interview from the Crytek CEO, the SM3.0 patch will not add any new NV40-only effects, but will add performance increases for NV40 users. Here is a link - check#8:

CryTek Comments on Shader 3.0 (http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=36&type=expert&pid=2)

The 1.2 patch was supposed to be out two weeks ago but has been delayed indefinitely. Also, there is speculation that the next patch is supposed to fix the issue with the game not detecting NV40 and R420 cards correctly which will also help with IQ and performance issues hopefully.

Of course if the next patch has been delayed they may be changing what is actually going to be in it now.

Yes and it seems to be spot on based on a looooong thread I read over at one of the UBI forums on that topic as well.
