If the GT can overclock to ultra speeds is there any point getting the ultra? the ultra apears to be at its max clock speed anyway. whats the ultra got that the gt doesnt?

not everyone overclocks. and some people have gotten the ultra to get speeds the GT cant dream of.

shrug, while using the drivers that actually work on my 6800 Ultra, I can get to clockspeeds of over 450 Mhz... And just between you and me, just because a few cards can overclock fairly well doesn't mean all cards will...

Its a simple math !

GT "Stock" = 350/1100Mhz + O/C ~ 400-425/1150Mhz max .
Ultra "Stock" = 400/1100Mhz + O/C ~ 450/1200Mhz max .
EE "Stock" = 450/1200Mhz + O/C ~ 470-480/1200-1300Mhz max .

got it ? ;)

Some Ultras are defaulted higher than 400
BFG: 425
XFX (one that we know of at least (http://www.nvnews.net/#1088227976)) 450

Chaintech is 425 as well.

my evga is also 425

I've not done much OC testing with my BFG 6800UOC yet but I will. :)

The point is for bragging rights. It's like having a Porsche Turbo. The only difference is that you're not governed by existing speed limts and you can open it up. With the Porsche, you just might get a ticket.

Not on the Autobahn. :)

I just broke 13,000 in 3DM03 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=2702763) with mine clocked at 460/1250. Also, the "Primeval" timedemo from 3DCenter.org has gone up from ~30fps (@ defaults of 425/1100) to ~50fps now...that at 1600x1200, noAA no AF, all in game settings otherwise maxed out.

Damn Max,

Is that stock cooling on the card or some mad mod like dry ice? :D What's going to end up limiting some of these card is the ram.

That is stock cooling my friend. And...I have the side panel of my case off...and my top case exhaust fan is out ATM and so I only have two Vantec Stealths exhausting air out the back. :)

I'm glad to see more and more nice overclocks out of the 6800 cores.
I hope my GT get's nice overclocks. I'm going BFG. :)
Man.... if nvidia could pull the mhz ati is out of the 6800 core
it would be super. The 6800 would kill the X800 clock for clock. :spank:
Nvidia needs Low-k bad.

Nvidia needs Low-k bad.
You can say that again.

Low K is probably reserved for nv48 the refresh of the nv40. :D I dunno if there will be any architectural changes in NV48.

But NVIDIA does use IBM's SOI. Which is also about lower power consumption and higher ..clocks...

I think that's the plan for sure.
It's a great plan because we all know
ati is releasing there SM3.0 chip.
Nvidia is ahead of the game right now.
They just need to add low-k and get the
drivers up to par. With 500+ core clocks
nothing will touch it.

True. If the NV40 did not use SOI it would
not reach these 450+mhz cores most likly.

One things for sure. Nvidia is back in the game big time.
They just need to kick the driver department in high gear.

So is low-k that much better?
Can they use both in one design?

MUYA

I meant the clocks bit. I dunno for a fact if low k will be better than SOI. It's a guess maybe that low k will give better thermal characterics for ASIC liek nv40s to consume less power but while clocking higher.

check these out and decide for your self ;)

i dunno i am no materials engineer :D
Edit: I also read somehwere that a ASIC has to designed around the manufacturing process too. So maybe with nv48 they have had enough time to "Design" around low-k?

Thanks for the links. :D

They should have had time to use low-k
if they wanted to.
The NV48 should have already taped out.
