Hello

I've installed the Nvidia drivers.
everything worked successfully.
But allways when i work with kde. surfing
or editing a file in an editor my screen freezes.
the system goes on working. in the log flies there is nothing to see that something went wrong.
i've tried the versions 2960 and 3125.
i tried the tar files, the source files and the rpm's of both versions for my suse 8.0.
but nothing helped.
i've no idea what it could be.
Please help me. I'm trying for 3 days getting my system run.
getting crazy.

THX.

Elvis

Maybe it not that sort of advice you are ask, but what about reinstalling suse 8.0? It takes 20 min or so
and select the unofficial nv driver of suse 8.0.

At least check boot-log files /var/log/boot.log about any interrupt or device conflicts and warnings.
Bad interrupt sharing f.i..
And your sytem BIOS about any Turbo modes, etc,...You can also run the suse install program to let it automatically check
about such conflics.

And whenever you switch to a textconsole (Alt-F3 f.i.) your system is working without any problems, right?
And with other windowmanagers than KDE the trouble with the freezing screen remains?
Is the mouse working well in X ? i would like to know when and under which concrete and precise circumstances the
freezing of the screen starts.

right. in the textconsole i have no problems.
i didn't try other windowmanger.
i have a logitech Desktop. with cordless mouse and keybord. my cordless mouse was defect. but i had the ps2 socket in the computer.
and i had a nother mouse on the usb. and sax always had two mouse's in the configfile. i wondered why. until i found out. now i have another cordless mouse on ps2 and i have no mouse problem.
the freezing starts when i surf the internet and mostly when i scroll windows or minimize them. when i listen to internet radio.
the music goes on so i'am still connected to the internet. my mouse goes often too. but no keybord and no X.
and in var log messages there is nothing very strange.

According to your description the trouble could be caused by IRQ 12. A PS2 mouse needs IRQ 12. ONLY for testing
DISABLE your sound card settings with YasT 2 and reboot your computer and check the freezing behavior again.

Hi elvis23,

I had just the same problems. I don't know the reason for these problems yet (no time to search in deep) but I found (with the help of this forum) a solution that works:

Disable AGP-support! How? Use the following option in your XF86Config(-4) file:

Option "NvAgp" "0"

(a detailed describtion at the end of my own thread from Oct., 15.)

If you have the "normal" problems with the combination of mainboard, processor and GeForce2, it will work.

I'm interested in the results - and still looking for an explanation (and perhaps better solution) for these problems.

Good luck!

Hey, I just wanted to let you know i'm experiencing the same thing on my box. i'm running slightly modified slackware 8.0 with a TNT2 nvidia card.

lets see i have updated my version of X and changed to several different nvidia kernel modules and still the same symptoms you are having.

i've been vague on software i have because i think it might be motherboard related????
i have a 950mhz Athalon on a A7V-E Asus MB. KT133 chipset. i beleive i have AGP turbo turned on.

My lockups have been happening in any windowmanager not one specific...and yes my computer is still running but the screen locks up. half the time i cannot even switch VC's to kill X.

when i telnet into my box while it's locked up i see that X is running and taking up 99% of the CPU. If i try to kill it my box is still locked up.

i've had this problem for a long while so tell me what info i'm leaving out to help finally solve this issue.

Does adding an Option "NoRenderAccel" "on" to the Device section of your X config file help at all?

Scrolling and minimizing -- these things are some of what the RENDER extension speeds up. If your card is accelerating the RENDER extension improperly for some reason, that might cause this...

no, NoRenderAccel On doesnt help too.
it still freezes. this vehaviour is very strange.
i would be very happy about a good advice that solves
my problem.

Tell us a bit more about your computer. And as it seems to be a hard core issue
set all your system BIOS settings to default, no overclocking of anything, etc,...!! Save
your original settings and do also print it (if possible) by
pushing the 'PrintScreen'-button of your keyboard to paper. Turn off your computer.
Then unplug ALL your PCI cards, etc,.., disable all unnecessary device onboard support in your BIOS.
And then boot again.

The behavior is strange indeed !
