i think im coming back to nvidia after a long departure.. (last cards were geforce2 and an elsa gloria III)
I have been pulling my hair out over ATI and their paperware x800xt...
i have pre-ordered and cancelled an x800xt 6 times now after being lied to by gateway, cdw, and compusa to name a few..
check out the rage3d forums and you'll see what i mean.

my question is this.. i noticed that the 6800 ULTRA IS READY FOR SHIPMENT on the advertisement on the front page of this site, but i cannot seem to find it anywhere.. Is there any place that has this card for sale? or is this just a lame advertising gimmick (or only available in 3rd world countries?).. and if it is when will it be ready to ship out to the public?

Another question... is the GT worth dropping cash on? And can it be modified through bioses and drivers to turn it into an ultra?

anyhow im glad im back ATI has given me a sick feeling in my stomach for too long...

Ok first question. Is the Ultra available now. Yes. Check the thread titled 6800 preorder guide and there is a bunch of links to various resellers. Also, Best Buy is stating they are shipping the Ultras tomorrow 7/2/04. Some of the places you may find try to charge more then MSRP. Up to you if you wanna pay it.

2nd question.....is the GT worth it instead of an Ultra.
At $100 less, its a real great performer. Plus, many have shown overclocks to Ultra lvls.......example being 416/1.1 430/1.2 You wont need to use a bios or driver hack to get the overclocks out of the GT. However, if your really into overclocking, the Ultra may have more headroom since it has 2 molex connectors.

One last thing. PSU requirements. 350w is miminum for Ultra and that has to have at least 18a on the +12 rail. The GT is a little less power hungry and minimum is 300w but again it should be 18a or better on the +12.

IMO the GT is the best buy. It's $100 less and usualy can be overclocked to Ultra speeds without any modding or even bios flashing, just using an OC util.

Unless you need dual dvi, go with the 6800GT. www.gameve.com and www.evga.com have it in stock, check out the preorder guide as K suggested for direct links.

If you live near a pcclub, www.pcclub.com, you can pick one up there, or get one ordered, as of now they are available.

No offense to Jakup but PCclub is gouging pretty bad. You can order one direct from evga for 499.99 for the ultra or you can get a GT for 399.99. Check the preorder guide page sticky and peruse through the links.

MSRP for the GT is 399
MSRP for the Ultra is 499

There have been some "sales" for the GT as Best Buy had a preorder sale a few weeks ago to get the GT at 299

Compuplus had it for 345, until they got a few orders then ran the price up and up and up and up to 479

Newegg gouges on a regular basis(sometimes by the minute you can watch the price climb)

Evga you can order direct for the GT at 399

yeah im sick of the run around with the x800xt.. I bought a new machine when i heard it was coming out and then they only seeped out 20 at a time every other week.. my new box is collecting dust and losing value day by day...
i had so many orders placed and cancelled it wasnt even funny anymore.. it has gone on for more than 2 months..

how do you like your gt? i think im gonna make the dive for one today, If you guys have any links that have benchmarks that stack this card up against the 800 series of atis it would be helpful

Pealing the ATI sticker off my box now,,,,

Ordered and canceled 3 - X800Xt's,,,

Just ordered a BFG FX6800 GT OC from Outpost,,,

I feel like I just cheated on my wife,,,,, have owned ATI cards since the Radeon 7000,,,,, My last nVidia card was a TNT2,,,

I keep my cards 2 years and decided that by next summer I would be missing PS3,,,,

I hope I don't regret going back to nVidia,,,,,

i really see no reason why someone would prefer ati over nvidia... i bought in to all of the hype around the 9800pro, and it was one of the most regretful decisions i've ever made. now i'm finally able to trade with a guy for a fx5900u, which IMO is 10x better than the ati counter part.

nice to see some ati people are switching over... not just going with ati because they don't like change, lol... nothing can beat nvidia's drivers at the moment, that's all there is to it.

i just go for the best card..
and when that card is paperware i go for the one that is available..
a year or so ago i bought and returned 4 different vertio(sp?) fx cards because they were crap and went with a 9700, at the time it was the best thing to do.
