Has there been anyone here on nV News doing benchmarks in Far Cry? I'm particualrly interested in their performance at 1600x1200 w/ AA + AF and high game settings.

Some people NEED to start doing some testing so that we know what these cards are actually capable of. I've seen some end users posting their worthless 3dmark scores and a few low res benches in Far Cry, but thats about it.

Did i just miss the threads?

There is a TON of people with Ultra's and GT's now so why isn't everyone benching? What are they using these $400 and $500 cards for? To play solitaire and minesweeper?

My XFX 6800GT should be here by Friday i'm hopeing and i have Far Cry and several other games so i will definitely try and get out some benches of my own.

What is the HIGHEST "playable" settings you can use in Far Cry with your 6800 and what is your average FPS?

I would benchmark Far Cry if there was a benchmark utility or some kind of demo that everyone can use.

Some of us are busy working on reviews. ;) And yes, there are threads here with benchmark results. You can find timedemo benchmarks at 3dcenter.org or make your own.

You could just fire up Far Cry and see what kind of fps your getting useing FRAPS. Its not as accurate and repeatable as time demo's though but it will give you a feel of how it plays in-game.

At 1600 x 1200 all at max settings, 6XAA 16X AF with my 6800GT OC'd to 415/1.10 I find i get playable fps in farcry. Things will only get better from here, what with official nvidia drivers and SM3.0 support, things are sure looking great for the 6800 series of cards.

Erm there's no 6xaa on NVidia cards :/

Impossible for three reasons, and possibly four.
1. You don't have the 1.2 patch yet.
2. Only 512 of ram = impossible to max out graphics and not have memory swapping @ any rez above 1280x1024.
3. There is no 6xAA for Nvidia, medium and high are both 4x for Nvidia cards in Far Cry.
4. You have a 17" lcd w/ a native of 16x12, highly highly doubtful.

Perhaps you are anticipating playing the game @ these settings when you get the patch, more memory, and a new monitor.

He didn't necessarily say it was an LCD in his sig. He just states it as a 17" Flat Screen. I have a CRT that is advertised as a "flat screen."

But you have very valid points with 1 through 3 :)

Well, are there any 17" CRTs that do 16x12? I thought the smallest CRT offering 16x12 were the 19 inchers, but is has been two years since I've used one so perhaps there are new offerings.

With a high-end CPU, the average frame rate on a GeForce 6800 Ultra ranges from 38-52 frames per second, depending on the map, at 1600x1200 w/4X AA and 8X AF using the "very high" game setting :)

My old 17" KDS did 1600x1200...but not very gracefully :) So for all practical purposes, perhaps not. :)

My 17" ViewSonic P70f can do 1920x1440 with 60hz.

when you guys test are you testing with "high" or "very high" settings...In all the benchmarks i have seen on FC everyone always says high

Ok according to benchemall:

Avg FPS @ 1600x1200 4xaa 8xaf everything set to Very High R300 mode: 42.85

61.71 Drivers w/ SP2

No idea if it's set to 4xaa I set highest options in far cry config and 4xaa and 8xaf in control panel.

Well, schuey, your right and your wrong. I said it would get better with the 1.2 patch, i didn't say i had it, where the hell did you find that? Then, im sorry i didnt mean 1600 x 1200, i meant 1280 x 1024, i shouldve posted an edit. My bad. As for 6AA, take a look at the farcry "system.cfg" log here- r_FSAA = "1"
r_FSAA_samples = "6" There, happy now? It does say 6. And as for my monitor, i said before i meant 1280 x 1024, not 1600 x 1200. Does that explain it all?

You can compare your settings and results to this:

http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjM1LDI=

We found the BFG GeForce 6800Ultra OC to not be noticeably faster in FarCry compared to the 25MHz slower NVIDIA 6800Ultra. We found 1280x1024 with 2XAA and 8XAF to be the best selection for image quality and performance. We did also find that you could play at 1600x1200 if you wish on the BFG 6800U OC but you’ll end up having to turn Off AA and AF to get smooth enough performance. The ATI Radeon X800XT performed the best in FarCry by having playable performance at 1600x1200 with 2XAA and 8XAF.

Why dont you guys try a few run-throughs in different levels of Far Cry at 1600x1200 w/ 4xAA + 8xAF and record your average fps with FRAPS.

Be sure and list the IQ settings you use in Far Cry. AA will have to be enabled in-game.

Everything at the highest it can go. You can leave aa and af off and set them thru the control panel, although purests prefer to setup custom configs when enabling aa and af.

Who there buddy, take a chill pill. I know you never said you had the 1.2 patch. What I was referring to was that without the 1.2 patch the game is running a good 10% - 15% slower at the moment for you, so the first settings you put up were partially impossible because of this. Next, no matter what your config says, Nvidia does not do 6x aa. It's a well known fact that medium (4x) and high (6x) in Far Cry are both only 4x on Nvidia cards. And I'm sorry if you stated the wrong rez, but that's your mistake, not mine. It makes a big difference in performance so I pointed it out.
So as I see it; it's Schuey right, right, right, and right. Don't blame me for your misinformation, I just pointed it out.

Just a question... Does the R300 mode give any extra performance? If so, how do i enable it?

Banko

Alright those results were wrong, I set af to 8 in the config file and the FPS changed from 41 to 37.27. Like I said 1600x1200 Driver: Quality AA: 4x: AF: 8x Tri Opt: On Ani opt: On Mode: R300 Avg Fps from benchemall: 37.27fps.

R300 mode lower performance but makes the quality the same as you would get with an ATi card, so this way it doesn't run in NV3x mode, and all the NV3x optimizations are taken off. This should be fixed in the 1.2 patch when it's not necessary anymore.

Yes, your card does rock! I just felt like you were exaggerating in your post a bit much, but understandable considering you're still quite excited with your new card. No biggie. :)
