I sold my radeon 9700 and think about buying a 6800GT in Sept as some here might know allready. I play games at 1152x864 all the time since the higher resolutions aren't perfectly sharp on my 19 inch CRT monitor.
I am very picky at this and i've yet to see a 19 ich CRT that is sharp at insane high resolutions. I know there is ppl that wanna reply now: my 19 inch displays 1600x1200 SHARP. Leave it guys it's not true or maybe true in your own world.

Is a 6800GT overkill for that kind of resolution or will future games need that kind of graphics performance to run the game fast even at that low resolution?
I do like FSAA and i do like stereo 3d gaming wich both need quite a lot gfx power.

I am thinking that a 5800NU would be enough but then again i see the NU is 300€ and the GT 400€ but the GT offers a lot more performance for that 100 bucks.
What to do, i am going in circles here.

I would say go for the GT best bang for the buck.

Well, my monitor doesnt display 1600x1200 really sharp, but their are monitors that do. Some NEC/Sony 21 inch monitors it is recomended that you run them at 1600x1200 for clearist picture... Hell there are some LCD's that have a native res of 1600x1200.

For upcoming ps2.0/3.0 games, and high levels of aa/af go with the gt.

Future game with most likely utilize the power of the 6800gt, to me it's worth it but to some it may not be.

Yeah i meant 19 inchs. The 21's sure can do.
I guess i'll just get the GT in Sept as planed. :)

I'm in sort of the same boat.. I've got a 9700 non-pro, a 17" LCD monitor which limits my res to 1280x1024 (and incidentally image quality on that is much better than the Hitachi 21" CRT I'm using to type this)

The reason I'm looking to upgrade now is that I *hate* playing below the native resolution of my monitor, and I need more 'oomph' to make HL2 and D3 run at (or as close as poss) to the desired 60hz/fps. I currently haven't bought Far Cry cos the framerate is low enough on my system to make it feel laggy, unless I either cut out all the eye candy or chop the res down.

It seems like I might be upgrading before you (with luck I'll be buying within a month) so I'll report back and tell you my experiences :)

It's worth it because you'll be able to use AA and AF at very high settings for the best image quality at great framerates.

@roscoe: Throw the 9700 n ebay as long you can. Just got 143€ for mine wich makes me quite happy. Payed 300€ a long time ago and got half of it back.
I can live with that. Geforce 6800GT here i caome. I just hope they release them with the VGA silencer within the next 2 months since i have a silent system and loved my VGA silencer.
If neccessary i'll wait for the silencer. :D
