After many posts about the performance boost attained from overclocking the GT to ultra speeds I have done some benchmarking to see if there is any real benefit on a midrange system. I used the Benchem' All defaults for Far Cry and UT2004.

Test system:

Athlon XP 3000+ @ 2.4Ghz (13 x 185)
Asus A7N8X-X (nForce 2 400)
768mb of PC2700 at 370mhz
BFG Geforce 6800GT OC @ 350/1.0 and 400/1.1
Soundblaster Live 5.1
Options set to quality in the CP

Far Cry- Max detail with 4xAA and 8xAF in the CP

1024x768
GT Speeds- Average FPS: 48.21
Ultra speeds- Average FPS: 48.79
Difference 1.2%

1280x1024
GT Speeds- Average FPS: 41.82
Ultra speeds- Average FPS: 45.58
Difference 8.9%

1600x1200
GT Speeds- Average FPS: 27.58
Ultra speeds- Average FPS: 31.06
Difference 12.6%

Unreal Tournament 2004- Max detail with 4xAA and 8xAF

1024x768
GT Speeds- 135.17fps botmatch
Ultra speeds- 135.30fps botmatch
Difference .09%

1280x1024
GT Speeds- 116.64fps botmatch
Ultra speeds- 121.94fps botmatch
Difference 4.5%

1600x1200
GT Speeds- 106.99fps botmatch
Ultra speeds- 116.18fps botmatch
Difference 8.5%

I will leave it up to you to decide if it's worth it.

It's not IMO.

Here a 3Dmark Excel spreadsheet I made doing the same thing ( of course my card is defaulted at 370 so the difference is less ):

Edited by MikeC: Thanks steeda. For those of you who don't have Excel:

That's very interesting, thanks!!!!

My results were opposite from your findings at default of 370/1000 I had a 3dmark score of 10992, at Ultra speeds I had 11700, and the little boost of 16/60mhz let me break 12000.

You give your self too little credit. I would still call you system high end. Its not the best money can buy but its still high end. Anyway I would not overclock based on those results.

How were they opposite? That looks inline with mine...

Never mind, there was some other performance thing somewhere in these forums w/ an Excel thought it was yours :/

The Ultra is the KING :D

Well I'd say the Ultra EE is. :)

the EE is just an Ultra core OCed.

MWHHA ERGO Ultra is the KING :D

Well i got my GT running at 400/1200 (with RivaTuner)Same again, tryed several configurations for clock speed and mem speed.Found this the ones that suite me best.
I managed 12000 plus in 3DM03 after OC.Initial test, stock speed, was almost 11.000.
At least at Ultra speeds i can not see any artifacts at the moment
Funny thing though;3DM01.Whatever i do (OC GFX,CPU) my score is always around 18300,18500.Any ideas on why this happens?

Hey NoWayDude,

I have the same problem in 3DMark2001 = 18,899.

BFG 6800 GT @ 410/1200 = 3DMark2003 = 12,737

Compare 3DMark2003 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=2749543)

Sys. Specs: P4 2.8@3.36, Asus P4C800E, 1 gig OCZ PC4000 Gold, 2 74g Raptors in raid 0, BFG 6800GT OC, Audigy2zs Gammer, XaserIII, Thermaltake 480 PSU, Thermaltake Silent Tower Heatpipe w/2 fans, XP pro.

Odd i know, but was hopping that someone could shed some light on this matter with 3DM01.

Hmm looks like it's not worth it at all. I somehow have the feeling i'll OC my GT as soon i booted up the system tho. Damn those voices in my head. :screwy:

MWHHA ERGO Ultra is the KING :D

But the Ultra is just an OCed GT =)

NoWayDude & Road_Star, remember that '01 is very dependent on the CPU. You are both running raid 0 arrays. Running a 16k stripe can hit your cpu as hard as 10%, while running a 128k stripe usually hovers between 1% & 2%. Obviously anything in between those two you can figure out. Even a 5% hit on your CPU is basically robbing you of 1000 marks in '01. And NoWayDude, if you are running 4x512 dimms then you are being hit for an additional 4% - 5%. Try taking out two of your dimms and watch your '01 score jump significantly. Redoing your raid can be a mission, but I got back around 8% in CPU performance when I redid my raid 0 array in 128k, instead of the 32k stripe I had before.

3dmark01 you only goes up considerably with CPU's, higher FSB, higher score =)

Thanks for the info schuey74, I thought it had something to do with my cpu. I had no change in score from 410/1150 through 410/1200. The memory clocks well on the BFG 6800GT cards! I'm just using air to cool everything and can only get a 20% overclock on the P42.8E
I was going to get a P4 3.4E when the 3.6 come out but it looks like they may not get a 3.6 out any time soon. :(
