Boozer was a second-round pick by the Cavaliers in the 2002 NBA Draft. Despite being a three-year star at Duke, he was ignored in the first round because many NBA teams believed he was too unathletic and small at 6-foot-8 (which is his true height, though he is listed as 6-9) to excel at power forward. But Paxson saw Boozer's potential and signed him to a two-year guaranteed contract for $989,000 (more than the minimum salary awarded to most second-rounders) with a team option for the third year.

Boozer turned out to be a steal. He averaged 15.5 points and 11.4 rebounds last year and earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. But Boozer was apparently worried about his longterm financial future. That's why he asked the Cavaliers to cancel their option for next season and instead allow him to become a free agent. In that case, Boozer promised (according to sources -- and common sense) that he would then re-sign with the Cavaliers for as much as $41 million over six years, the maximum they could offer a free agent with fewer than three years experience under their salary-cap constraints.

Paxson held all the cards on this deal. He could have ignored Boozer's pleas and forced him to fulfill the team option at a salary of $695,000 in 2004-05. Next summer Boozer would have been a restricted free agent, giving the Cavs the right to pay him as much as they wished along with the ability to match any offer Boozer received.

Instead, Paxson and Cleveland owner Gordon Gund nullified their option. They gambled on Boozer's word and set him free. According to a source who was in the room at the time the verbal deal was struck, Boozer told Gund, "If you respect me by not picking up the option, I'll show trust and loyalty to you by signing with you."

But instead of keeping to his word, Boozer agreed this week to a six-year, $68 million contract with Utah. (I tried, through a variety of sources, to give Boozer's agent, Rob Pelinka an opportunity to respond, but I was unable to reach him.)

what a total hack-job...

as much respect as I had for him this past season its all gone...

wow... to do this to a guy who gave you more than you deserved to start with and was upping your deal again... this is just despicable...

I didn't know anything about this side of it. I just thought it was crappy from the beginning since the Cavs were starting to put a team together. Seems like a double cross if I ever saw one. And now the scumbag of an agent is running for cover.

I have to say if boozer had discussions w/o his agents knowledge/presence that would explain some of it...

its not like the agent needs the money anywayds... he has kobe bryant as a client :)

Hmm.. I have seen him play many times at Cameron Indoor Stadium. I don't see what the big deal is. He didn't seem all that great to me.

You must not have been watching the same basketball games I was (and the Cleveland Cavs were because they drafted him). His talent was a little overshadowed because he played on a team with a man more popular than Jesus: Shane Battier. That team also happened to include 2 more top 6 picks in the NBA: Jay (or Jason as he was known in college) Williams and Mike Dunleavy. So 4 NBA players in one starting 5. It was hard for Boozer to shine, but he did very well when he did get the ball. He was hard to stop around the basket and he was a monster on the boards. The reason he didn't get drafted very high was because he played the 5 spot in college, but he's more of a power forward, and so the NBA thought he'd be a tweener. Too small to play Center, and too klunky to play power forward.

So are you a Duke alum/student? I'm curious how you got to see games in Cameron Indoor. Because you don't seem like the typical Dukie, who worships the ground that all the Duke Basketball stars walk on.

I watched him through his career @ duke through his first few years with the big boys and over the past season and a half he really came along to become someone to be reckoned with...

very impressive

Great points, and I agree, I have a friend attending Duke, his father is big alum, he actually has the hallway that you enter Cameron named after him. He has 4season tickets on the halfcourt line just above the students for life, my friend usually takes me to 6 or 7 games a year. It's a great time, I have met Mike Dunleavey, CoachK and his family. I have autographs of Mike Dunleavey.

I like all of the Duke players, Boozer just seemed inconsistant. When he was having a bad day, he was a klutz, maybe he has sorted things out in the NBA, as I don't watch NBA, for college ball has my heart and it's just not the same.

I graduated from NCSU, and every game Duke played against State, Boozer basically owned the wolfpack. He looked like all-world in some of those games. However I did pull for them in the NCAAs, just to keep the trophy on tobacco road.

As for the NBA, his talent wasn't fully recognized at Duke, perhaps because he was playing with Battier, Williams, and Dunleavy. But it seems now that his talents are well suited for the NBA and he's in demand. In any case, he's now a very rich man with a tarnished reputation, even if he's not truly the bad guy that he's made out to be now.
