Alright guys, upgrading CPU/MB/RAM. Budget is ~$500(US). Going for an athlon 64 system, w/ 3200.
Current System:
Athlon XP 2600+
Zalman 7000A-alcu
1gb pc2700
EVGA 6800 GT
80 GB WD
ASUS A7nv8x-x

I REALLY don't have any idea what kind of MB or RAM I'm going to need here. Looking for mild OC's, nothing incredible. Looking for any suggestions. As an extra I'd like for the MB to be compatible compatible with the large zalman heatsinks =)

Why don't u look here for links;

archives (http://www.nvnews.net/cgi-bin/archives.cgi)

I have linked to many K8 motherboard reviews in the roundups :D In all flava of chipsets, sockets etc ;)

Really grateful for the advice(I have been and still am looking through the archives) but I'm mainly looking for personal experience right now. Seems to me that for every new feature that helps out with the A64's there's 5 that hurt performance, don't make a difference, or are way too bugged to use. And since reviewers don't usually update their articles after BIOS revisions and such, that's what I'm looking for.

well for whats it worth, most nvnews forumsmembers I know who have taken the K8 route have gone with via K8t800 mobos from MSI mostly as that seems to be a solid and stable mobo for k8s. Of course you have nforce3 250 chipset mobo but so far I haven't anyone give a personal account of it.

I have a Chaintech Vnf3-250 and that nforce chipset is very nice.

MSI K8N Neo Platinum (NF3 250GB) (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-457&depa=0) - $130 (fits zalman hsf)
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-483&depa=0) - $282
1gb pc2700 (keep)
EVGA 6800 GT :cool:
80 GB WD (keep)

Total = $414

O'cing that setup all depends on yer ram but to be sure I'd recommend picking up 1gig of PC3200 ram from either OCZ (especially their EB series) or Corsair. Its your choice though. btw, keep your eye out for the ASUS K8N-E Deluxe (http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket754/k8n-e_d/overview.htm) board, it can be had for a 'lil more than the MSI one.

That's very close to the system I'm about to build [all components bought and assembled except the Zalman all copper heatskink which is in transit].

Bought me an A64 3200+ ClawHammer, Epox 8kda3j mobo [NF3 250GB], 1gig OCZ 3700EL Gold Rev2, eVGA G800GT, and 1 74gb raptor.

Gonna try to push the GT to 425/1100 and the 3200+ to 2.4ghz.
