If I leave off the pci slot covers where I have no pci cards would that help cooling the case? Is it safe to do that or you think dust will come in?
More dust is probably going to happen. But if you're going to leave the case open make sure you have cool room or if the room is hot have a fan blowing air across the case that will cool it a lot.
If heat really is an issue, you may want to consider a illuminum case if you dont already have one. This make a lot of different in heat. Thats what I did.
lol i lost all my pci slot covers so i got all wholes doesn't really do anything for me.
Cant you buy the covers from someplace?

well it depends sometimes it means for dust but my house isnt dusty so no dust get in anyway hehbeen running this setup with 0 dust buildup on my cpu fan or anything.
Also I would think not having any slot covers in the back would disrupt airflow and may not cool things as well.
Maybe not

They are called blanking plates, not PCI covers :)
They have been around since way before PCI.

I've heard them referred to as backplates as well.

If you lost the plates I'd at least duct tape up the opening. Air circulation will be adversely affected, and heat will stop being pumped out from your case fans I believe. Probably won't make or break your computer, but if you're an avid overclocker it might be a red flag.
This is actually an A+ Certification question. Yes, you can overheat your PC by leaving those plates off. Put them on.
