Hey, I've posted this exactly same thread sometime ago but ppl started to talk about other things and somehow nobody even tried to help me. Hope it doesn't happen again.

Two months ago I got an eVGA 5900se and I am not satisfied with its perfomance.

I've been trying to play farcry (@1024x768) with a decent frame rate but it seems to be IMPOSSIBLE!

All the settings (textures, lighting, shadows, etc) are set to 'medium', no AA or ANISO and I can't keep the framerate above 40. It actually drops to 19-25 fps all the time.

I've formated my computer, I've tried FW 56.72, 60.72, 61.11 and 62.01 and things don't seem to change.

My System:

Epox 8RDA+
XP1700+@2000mhz (200x10)
2x256mb GEIL 400 2.5-3-3-11
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 40 GB
Huntkey 400w
WinXP Pro

Here is 3dmark01 and 03 links:

And before someone asks, yes, I have tried to run the game without OCing the processor.

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers from Brazil

I actually have a bit better system then you, a much better card 9800pro, and I get around 25-40 everything maxed. Honestly the card you bought just plane jane sux. I would if I was u I was do something about getting a different card.

That is what I tought, but I have seem ppl with about the same specs as me and this same card running the game much better than I do.

That is with an OC on the video card, which is, a eVGA FX5900SE

I don't particularly like my Far Cry performance, and I use all low settings. Don't have a particular benchmark utility to use, so I'd just have to wing it and say maybe 30-40 FPS at the most

P.s. My stock score is 5000, I'll post a 3DMark score for that if you want it

Btw, the 9800pro isn't all that much better than the 5900SE. It might be a tad bit, but all out not that much of a difference

This kinda posting is inappropriate. Whether you like his card or not there are better ways to relay the message that he may want to upgrade.

Let the :fanboy: begin! :angel2:
Seriously: The 5900 is horrible slow with PS2.0. It's a well known issue. The 5900 are great cards as long PS2.0 is not involved. FarCry is one of the new games using a lot PS2.0 features therefore the FX line is having trouble.

If i remember right lowering the lighting detail shuts of a lot pixel shaders (2.0) and might help. No way to play at max detail with your card i fear.

Put all on high, then shadows and light on medium, then use 62.01. Try OpenGL as well. Go to system.cfg in Farcry folder then find r_driver=Direct3D9 change to r_driver=OpenGL.

Part of his problem is 512mb of memory. I added a 256 stick to my 512 and it cleared up most of the problems in game and cut my loading times in half.

There is nothing wrong with the 5900se. It's just a slightly underclocked 5900nu.

Did you buy it from eVga directly? you might quality for their buy-back program where they give you full purchase price for an upgrade. It applies to everyone who bought their cards from Feb, 2004 to current. It might be worth a trade-in on a 6800GT>

Have you tried overlocking your card? I remember reading reviews where the Geforce 5900XT (the same as your se) was gaining 10fps in FC from overclocking.

Just get a 6800 for 299 or less if you can find it. It 'pwn' the 9800< That's for the kiddies.

I agree with anzak, the problem is 512 megs of memory. Everything I have read says FarCry is a memory hog and needs more then 512 megs (preferably 1 gig).

5900SE, while not fastest card, is still 256 bit memory bandwidth and should run FarCry just fine at 1024 x 768 (Not max settings but fairly high).

I have read of lots of people playing FarCry on 5700's and 5700 Ultra's just fine, and 5900SE is much faster than those. But they had the extra memory and fairly quick cpu's to back the 5700's up.

I am not really a fan of either nVidia or ATI, but i have to disagree with that. I ran farcry on my friends pc with a stock speeds 9800 pro and stock speeds 3000+ barton. It ran 4xAA/8xAF everything on very high graphics + ultra high on water and it ran at about 15-20 FPS outside of the cave at the beginning (1024 x 768 res). And when I put in a 5900se in a same specs pc and tried doing the same, the difference in FPS is about 5-6 which is a great difference when frames are in the 9's instead of 15's.
