View Full Version : Geforce FX 5700 Ultra slow

First off it seems as if my video card is not reaching its full potential. It seems like it is running games at the same speed and drops into the mid 20's even on older games like Ground Control, Alien vs. Predator 2, and MOHAA. All these games I have no anisopteric filtering, or anti-aliasing on running @ 1024x768, I can lower the resolution and details and still no difference in fps. It also does the same thing on some of the newer games like Americas Army, Unreal 2, and even BF1942, I can lower the details on all of them and still can drop like a rock down to the 20's. I can understand it dropping...but not that low, from most of the reviews I read about this card it performed considerably well. Any suggestions on why it is doing this??? Vsync is off.

Well thanks for at least reading guys. Guess none of you know why. Thanks for the help. :) Peace.

First of all, you bumped only an hour after you posted. Not everyone will just drop what they're doing and post here. Give it at least 24 hours in the future.
Now onto your problem, did you do a clean format/install of Windows before installing the 5700? What video driver version are you using? Are your motherboard/chipset drivers up to date?

Yes I did a format and clean install of Windows before I put it in. Everything is up to date. I'm using the 56.72 drivers and v4.51 VIA chipset drivers. And v5.7 for my BIOS which is the latest one. I'm thinking I maybe CPU limted, but that wouldn't explain why the heck even my older games are performing the same as the newer ones.

damn, that was almost 24 hours to the minute, hehe. Are your 3DMark scores equally as crappy?

Do me a favor. Post a 3dmark2001SE score, (yes I dont love 3dmark but I can usually get an idea of something being wrong with your system by it)
be sure to post a compare so I can look at it. Believe it or not I have always used 3dmark2001SE for diagnosing problems ;p
I have a 5700 ultra in my 2nd machine and experience no problems with it. Not sure what to tell you, but if you have aa or anything like that set instead of application controlled, it will over-ride what you select inside a game. As a comparison, in my 3.2 p4/1024mb pc3200 system with the 5700 ultra, I got just over 4000 in 3dmark 03 with no OC on vid card. In my 1.7p4/768 mb rambus 800 system with the 5700 ultra, 3dmark 03 is roughly 3500

3dmark2001se - 10930
3dmarik2003 - 3600
Thats in line with what you should be getting in 3dmark 03. Please tell me tho what your PSU ratings are. Also, if you have 1 gig of system ram, maybe want to update your sig
07-19-04, 03:27 PM
Well I only have 512, 2x256 mean I have 2 256 sticks in there. My PSU is an Antec 350 watt.
Ok that may be the issue. Most ppl have reported that Farcry REALLY REALLY wants 1 gig of system ram to run without stuttering as the game is constantly swapping stuff in memory. Try upgrading your memory to 1 gig.

I know my RAM isn't the problem because the game doesn't stutter. 2nd I don't play FarCry.:) It seems like when there is alot of action the fps can drop to 30's and sometimes 20's even in AvsP2 which is really lame 'cause I know this vid card can do alot better than that. And not matter what res I run any game same fps. In UT2k3, it can drop down to around 30 even at 640x480 lol. at 1024x768 get the same thing and can have 4xAA on!!!
Sorry, I got two different posts mixed up as I was replying to two different circumstances in two threads. My bad. Ummmm, only thing I can now think is the cpu is the limiting factor for your fps. I dunno
I dont think thats it. I have a evga gf 5700 ultra and I think it runs great. I ran UT2k4 demo with everything maxed at 10x7 and it was really smooth. I play lots of old games like CS, DoD, and even newer ones like CoD, Farcry and X2. They all run great.
Are you sure AA or AF is not turned on in the control panel overriding everything. Maybe the card is just somehow defective and needs to be returned. If you have another computer or a friends computer you can try it in to see how it runs.

Well I was thinking my CPU was limitin my vid card but would that affect older games you think they would be running faster.
Ohh I remember my friend was having a problem *similar* to this. It turned out it was a problem some how with his sound card messing up. This is a quote from his thread:
"one thing i tried actually finally fixed it. if you have onboard audio..disable it in bios...and try running your Open GL games.. if they run alot better..then your intergrated audio is your problem. if you get a PCI soundcard, it could very well correct the problem."
I guess you dont have onboard audio though.

3dmark2001SE score seems about right too for that FSB/setup.
Maybe you are expecting too much? These cards have 14.4 gigs of bandwith right?
07-19-04, 03:55 PM
Something like that. I probably need to upgrade my cpu and that will give me a big performance boost. I can get to 2.2ghz if I overclock I noticed about a 3-5fps gain in most games maybe I should upgrade to a 2600+. Maybe I am expecting too much out of the card.
Not sure, but like I said my 5700 ultra in my 2nd pc runs games just fine and its in a 1.7 p4
