View Full Version : Zalman? Thermaltake? GPU cooling Suggestions Needed please

Okay.... so I finally got my 5900XT to a 5950Ultra and I'm very happy.

but... I need a good cooler for the GPU.

I kind of had in mind something like;

Thermaltake Extreme Giant III (http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/chipset/a1919.htm)
or
The Zalman ZM80D-HP Dual heatpipe (http://www.quietpc.com/uk/vgamb.php)

I've been looking at various coolers, but I am worried about the large ramsinks on the card already. They won't come off and they're pretty big.

Can anybody please tell me if they'll fit, or suggest something better?
Many thanks
:)

really don't think the thermaltake would fit on that setup... the ramsinks that come with it are low profile just for the heatsink to fit well.

the zaleman will be a lot better candidate, but i don't know if it would fit or not. i have those, and it's about 1.5-2 inches apart (the whole thing), so measure your ram sinks and see.

best bet is if you've got a local store with it to look at it in store and see, or ask them if you can take it back if it doesn't fit. much easier that way, since you don't have to deal with the mail.

I have a fx5900 non-ultra sitting right here at my desk with the zalman on it. By using those capacitors next to the memory heatsinks as a reference I'd say it'd be close but they should fit. This of course, is a ROUGH estimate as the picture's at an odd angle. I'd say I'm about 78% sure it'd squeeze in. if you took a level picture from the side with the molex connector I might be able to tell a little better....but I'm leaving for a week in about 4 hours so if you're gonna, you'd better hurry =)

I would recommend the Zalman as well. Just make sure you purchase the fan to go along with it.

Thanks for the input everyone. :)
I've just "sensibly" measured the offending ramsinks. They are about 19mm high.

Zalman, huh? Interesting......
I thought that one would be blocked at the GPU.
I couldn't see if the heatpipes would reach 18mm-19mm above the GPU (blocked by the beefy ramsinks)

:D

I still don't think there is room to attach the pipe.

oh and 78%... :D

That picture helps a lot more. Looking at it now I'm a little less sure about it. The actual bracket things should just barely clear the ramsinks(still not 100%). But I'm fairly sure that the heatpipe would be in the way. BUT thankfully the heatpipe isn't all that big, SO what you can do is try to file down 1 or 2 of the teeth on the sink and it shouldn't be a problem. Also shouldn't cut down the effectiveness of the ramsinks noticably if that's an issue.
Wish I had a working digital camera here so I could at least give you something to compare. I didn't have this problem...just left my RAM bare. But that was with a non-ultra, we didn't HAVE XT's back then. =(

Thanks for the replies. :)

I think I'm going to risk it..... good call on the ramsink suggestion..... I never thought of that....
