Ed "saturnotaku" Piotrowski has finished his review of the BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC. This is a singular review of the BFG 6800 GT OC. Although not compared against another card, Ed does provide a variety of benchmarks and some helpul insight as to what this card has to offer.

Looks good so far. Just a quick note, I get an error when clicking the link at the bottom of the first page ("Next Page: Test setup and Forceware drivers"). If I click the link in the TOC, it works.

This is the error:

The requested URL /reviews/bfg_geforce_6800_gt_oc/page_2.shtml was not found on this server.

Edit: Nice review Ed. I was particularly interested in it because your CPU is close to mine and I'm also using a GT. Very nicely done. I look forward to the CPU scaling article as well as I'm currently contemplating upgrading my mobo and CPU.

Yep, the link on the first page to the second has an underscore in the filename, it should go to page2.shtml not page_2.shtml. Just wanted to point that out.

Nice review as always.

Thanks guys, I fixed the broken link to page2.shtml. ;)

/me feeds viagra to the pics...

-edit-

nm only seems to be affecting pics on the first page (ie the ET pic and the one below it)

ok these are the ones that don't work for me...

ET/serious sam/amped/far cry/ut2k4/nalu pic..

the ones that do work are Halo and Painkiller...

can anyone else dbl check?

How about the noise of this card?? I've read on some other sites that its noticeably louder than the X800's and read an end-user review that said the whining pitch of the fan drives him crazy?

I am ready to buy this card except that “noise” is an issue for me and I really don’t want to listen to a video card fan all the time so “how loud is it?”

@saz...I don't have any problems

Just the BFG one or GTs in general? I have an eVGA GT and an X800 Pro and I can't tell a difference in the noise level. My systems are fairly quiet and I can't hear either one above the system noise. Although, on boot you can hear the GT as the fan revs up. Can you provide the link to the review where they mentioned that?

Edit: As far the pics, I can't enlarge any of them until I reach Halo. From Halo on, it works for me. Actually, just make mine a double of what Saz is having. I'm having issues with the same pics.

Edit 2: zillatech, actually, I have read that some have had problems with the fan rubbing against the enclosure when first getting them. It may have been that problem that the reviewer mentioned (b/c it is a loud and annoying sound and could take a while to go away).

I tried it earlier, in IE I had probs with them not enlarging. Then selected "open in another window" and got the page can not be displayed error.

BRB, let me try Mozilla as well, for comparison.

Edit: seems to work fine in Mozilla but not IE

Ok, I've tried in Firefox without any problems. In IE there is an error because of a javascript "invalid argument" error...the js statement just isn't complete, looking into it now...

In general, reviews have said that the GT's are louder than the X800's and I recently ditched my X800 Pro to wait for Nvidia's 6800 GT's/Ultras. From what you’re saying the GT sounds like it has "acceptable" noise levels. Also, since you have both the X800 Pro and the GT, which one do you prefer and why? I myself have come to love Nvidia's drivers and game compatibility

Yeah, I was using IE as well. Works fine with Mozilla.

Odd, the js code is basically identical between Halo (which works) and some earlier images that do not. I first thought it was case sensitivity in filenames since this is an Apache server on Linux box. Hmm, still looking into it.

Bingo! :) The problem was the space in the window handle name. Tisk tisk Sat ;)

EDIT: Ok all you IE users :bleh: :D ...problem should be fixed now.

Unfortunately, the .shtml stuff this site uses won't even load up in IE when I tried to test out my pages/layout. Whenver I would try to open a page in IE, the page source would come up in Notepad. I had to use Mozilla for testing, and all my stuff worked fine there.

In any case, thanks to all for their kind words. As soon as I garner up some free time I'll get right to work on the CPU scaling story. I did an inital run in RTCW: ET with the P4 EE. 1280x1024, no AA/AF (where we saw a CPU bottleneck) scored nearly 93 fps compared to the 82.5 from the 3.0c. That's an encouraging start, but I can't really say if that kind of increase justifies the very steep price premium of a P4 EE over, say a 3.4 GHz Prescott or Athlon 64. Stay tuned!

Yes, I recently put my two systems back on a switch so they're sitting pretty close to each other and are easy to compare. The only real difference I can tell between the noise level is when booting. The GT revs up the fan on boot and it drops back down once windows starts. At that time, it's louder than the X800 Pro and I can hear it above the system noise. Other than that though, I can't tell a difference and both are quiet. I haven't compared them with the case open though to see which card is actually louder with no external factors masking what noise they cause.

Hey Sat, do you have any pics of your GT's core cooling method? I'm very curious to know if it is Arctic Silver caliber thermal compound or a lesser quality variety.

Good job Sat! Nice review and I agree with MUYA on the overclock. :)

I like that review because it kept it to the point with a good number of games with a few resolutions in each game keeping the charts clean and very easy to follow. NICE OVERCLOCK SAT! Maybe, if you get a chance, go into core overclocking and memory overclocking separately. This is turning out to be one awesome card Nvidia put out is the bottom line.

I want to reiterate that I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I've at least done some inital testing on the whole overclocking thing. And I wanted to let everyone know about this:

I did not test 3DMark in this review. However, I did bite the bullet and install '03 build 340. With my OC set at 424/1120, Mother Nature locked up hardcore. At 420, I noticed some shimmering/sparking. Lowering the core down to 418 seemed to resolve all problems. I re-ran my RTCW test at the same speed. Extrapolating my results from it because I had upgraded my CPU at the time, my calculations showed that this slight decrease in core speed cost me a whole 1 frame per second. With the frame rates this card churns out, I'd say that's statistically insignificant. But I still felt it was necessary to add this.

That's interesting, I'd say our cards are 'brother's considering the experience overclocking it you have. Your final results are almost exactly like mine, though I still get some 'sparking' on the turtle shell at 415, most people might not even notice it (I never did till I started really paying attention to the shell). In the end I'm rock solid/no shimmer/sparkle at 410/1100.
Hey,
have you noticed white a white dot or small line that flashes during the Far Cry loading screen? I was told this is artifacting, is that true? It's very quick, and just a flash of a white line about an inch long, or a white dot, during the Far cry loading screen...Anyone notice this?

I have noticed this and it happens to me at stock speeds as well. This is normal, nothing to worry about. :)

Only in the UK or USA. You'd have to find someone to ship it to you, and even then I'm not sure if you'd be able to take advantage of BFG's warranty.
