Cool. I have a 150 watt PSU. It's a Dell. I've been running a BFG 6800 GT OC for a week or two now no problems so far. Someone said earlier when i asked that Dell rates its PSU's differently. Is there anyway to tell if the PSU isn't powerful enough? I took out my FD and modem to conserve power just in case. (drunk)

That's my exact power supply up there :lol2: , Antec 480 watt true blue. I'm having problems with it and my PNY 6800 Ultra. It says that the 12v line is rated at 22a max but when I have my CPU overclocked from 2.8 to 3.0 and my 6800 ultra oc'd to 425, my games lock up. When dropped down to stock, things run smooth as butter. I'm not too saavy when it comes to the whole overclocking experience but is it my power supply that is causing the problems with overclocking or are there any suggestions for settings I should use in my system bios (such as CPU Core voltage, AGP voltage, etc.) I want to overclock the CPU from 2.8 to 3.0 and the PNY 6800 ultra from 400 to 425.
Thanks

I am surprised it works at all, were you mistaken and meant the 250 watt? Those I know can handle alot. If your pc randomly restarts and such that should be a sign.

Nope its a 150. :headbang:
I was afraid i'd have to buy a new psu but it doesn't look like it.
Sometimes I get the random "your card has downclocked because of not enough power" on my ultra, I have 2 dedicated molex connectors connected to it. It seems like that message only pops up when I accidently bump my table, or whenever the card wiggles around. It makes me uneasy at times when it does this. I have an enermax 475W.
the adapter that the EVGA card came with blew my cd rom and my HD, I'm tihnking it had something to do with my crappy PS.

Could we get a hands-on confirmation of how powerful a PSU the stock Geforce 6800 requires?
Just so those of us who are in the process of buying a whole computer would have a good orientation...

The actual W-rating (350, 430, 500, etc) doesn't matter as much as the fact that you want a power supply with a strong A-rating on the +12V line. For a 6800 GT, you will want a PSU with a rating of at least 18A, for a 6800 Ultra 20A would be ideal. Base your searches around that and you'll gain a much better idea of what works best with the 6800 lineup.
I was wondering if my Nexus NX-4000 PSU can handle a Geforce 6800 GT, or even better a 6800 Ultra? Specifications can be found here:

I know that its a pretty high quality PSU, but I just want to be sure. Can you help me out here?

A GT, probably but I think it would be a bit of a strain on the Ultra especially since it can't pull off a continuous load of 18A. Read what I said in my first post. I personally wouldn't take the chance, but you're always welcome to try.
F*ck
Then perhaps ill just buy a X800XT PE, though i would rather have a 6800U :(
If I change my mind and buy a new PSU, is there any you can recommend? It has to be highquality, powerful and as quiet as possible.
I originally had an Antec 430 True blue, but when I couldn't get my system stable, I upgraded to an Antec 550 True Control.
It turned out to be a memory issue, so I'm guessing that the 430 would have been fine. It has sufficient amperage, and wasn't too loud.
However, the 550 has got power to spare, the voltages and fan speeds are adjustable from the front panel, and it is much quieter, so I don't regret the upgrade at all.
Im thinking about buying one of these two PSU's:

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

I was going to get this same one and looked around for all the reviews on it, everyone of them were good. Heay, quiet, etc, all positive and those bright sleeves are awesome. :drooling:
not a fan of thermaltakky stuff...
Hey Jakeup, i'm surprised to hear you're having problem with your 475W noisetaker. I have the same PSU. You might want to check to see if every molex is secured onto the vidcard, I find the molex connectors on my enermax to be really smooth and slippery. Oh, Did you use the EXTRA (molex connector) for the main power connector for your ultra??
My eVGA 6800 Ultra arrives this afternoon. I have a Thermaltake 420 and will let you guys know if I encounter any problems. I run my 3.2 GHz CPU at 3.53 GHz and I have two hard drivers and two DVD drives (one is the writer). Besides 3 additional fans, thats all thats in it. Its rated at 18A on the 12volt rail so I expect no issues. If I get weird lockups and such, I will advise.
I have a thermaltake purepower 420w running stable with the system in my sig. This is a good PSU for around $30. 18 amps on the v12 is running great even with an overclocked CPU and 6800GT.
Pc power and cooling Turbo cool 510w carrying 34 A on the 12 volt line GREAT PSU! Worth every penny costing me $210

ATX should be what u need. Check with alienware and see if they use a special design like dell's.
