I have this problem where most games won't allow me to select a 1280x1024 resolution. Anyone offer an explanation? Half Life, No One Lives Forever 2, and Battlefield 1942 are the culprits so far. Would I be better off playing at 1152x??? or 1600x1200? Or is this just an odd resolution?

1280x1024, for whatever reason, doesn't follow the normal proportions for a resolution.

Use 1280x960 if it will let you instead. Same proportions as 640, 800, 1024, and 1600.

Well when I try that resolution, it looks messed up because my desktop resolution is set at 1280x1024x32@85hz and the refresh is locked in so I get laggy 3D when playing at a res other than my desktop res. I may just switch to that 1152x whatever it is and check it out. Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty sure I could play at 1600x1200 on most games anyhow. My PC is moderately powerful.

Go to the drivers forum, get all the info on fixing your refresh rate for all resolutions. 1280*960 is the next best thing to 1280*1024, as most of us if not all of us, do resize our screens, so even if 1280*1024 is an odd res, the screen is resized to make it look "normal" if you can use 1600*1200 by all meens go for it, or use 1280*960 and turn up the anio filtering to 4x (u dont need 8x) and maybe 2x or quinc FSAA, yes IMHO 1280 + FSAA does look better than just 1600* res, but thats just a matter of taste, and how fast the game runs ;)

320x240 is far by the best resolution in terms of IQ.
