Yesturday I was "playing" with one Point of View 6800GT (256MB DDR3 Samsung 2ns) 350/1000 DDR MHz with reference PCB design and cooling and the temperatures reported by the card seemed a bit strange.
Just a minute or two after booting the GPU has around temperature 65 degrees celsius and after running some benchmark for about 10-20 minutes it goes to 85+ degrees...
Have you noticed similar temperatures on other 6800 cards, are these temperatures normal for a GT or it is just some problem with that particular card I've got?
I wonder what should be the temperatures of the 6800 Ultra Extreme running at 450/1200 with air cooling...

Run the rthdribl tool in widowed mode --> http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/

Have your Nvidia temp display up, and run it for 10 min, then post back with your temp. With your high 2D temp, I think you will find your card is running much hotter. When you exit a 3D application, and quickly look at the temp, it's already dropped 7-10c. You really need to look at it in real time.

I know that, the highest temp I've got was 88 degrees (not clocked), but it depends on the benchmark I'm running so thats why I've written 85+. And since thats the first 6800 series card I got for testing I think this temperature is a bit high... So if you have 6800-based card please post your temps (at default frequencies) and type of cooling here.

56C idle, 74C load. However, this was after I rearranged and tied my power and IDE cables for better airflow. Before I did this, I was getting 62C idle, 84C load. Try improving your case airflow, this is very important.

Mine does this like most others are the same.

2D 59-61c Non OC

3D (games) around 68-71c Non OC

Case has 2 x Exhaust fans.

Dont forget to mention room temperature. This makes a world of difference.
Are you running in an AC cooled room of 70F to 75F. Here are some tests I ran on my card with different room temps. These are all clocked at 400/1000 on a BFG 6800 GT

Running HDR demo or Dynamic branching demo during all these temp tests.

room temp 23c (74F)
gpu temp 83c
amb temp 53c

room temp 25c (77F)
gpu temp 85c
amb temp 54c

room temp 29c (85F)
gpu temp 90c
amb temp 60c

I even get 80c+ at 350/1000 so 80c is pretty comon. Make sure if you use the HDR demo to maximize it, otherwise it doesn't make your gpu get as hot.
If you run HDR in 800x600 on a 1024x768 screen. Your gpu won't be working as hard and not getting as hot as if you maximized it.

My case has a lot of airflow and is all illuminum so heat just passes right thru the case walls. Just having an illuminum case reduces temps a lot.

I dont have AC.

No artifacts appeared or lockups or anything else happened during these tests. Most I ran for an hour or more. Some over night.

These temperatures are at 25 C room temp. with the video on a stand not in a PC case. So it seems these cards are a bit HOT...
I've tried with adding an 120mm fan (around 50 cfm) blowing directly on the card and the temperature didn't go beyond 77.
