jumbled or garbled pieces of graphics on the screen due to either a bad card, too much overclocking, or insuficient power to the card.... it can also be caused by junky drivers and such

the best way to describe it is if you see glitches, missing textures, halls of mirrors, inapproatie color palette on certain textures, missing walls, missing polys, etc etc

most people find a easy soultion to fix this, find better drivers, make shure adequate power is going to the card, or not overclocking the card so high, if you overclock to begin with..... artifacts are usually not permanent, unless of course the card is damaged

sometimes the game programming can be buggy, and can cause that specfic game to have articfacts during the course of gameplay...

so it can be alot of things

EDIt: most common artifact is "specs" of pixelated colors and such.. but there are plenty other forms of it

Actually, artifatcs and "snow" are totally different. Artifacts are from memory being to OCd too high or hot. Artifacts and long straight lines of texture corruption. "Snow" is what was posted above, and little tiny dots that are malcolored that is from the core being OCd too high/hot.

I always refered to this:

as snow.

But if I am wrong, all well.

Artifacts (in computer terms) means anything that isnt supposed to be there. Most of the time around here, people use the word when reffering to a graphical error. You will either see colored shapes that flicker, or white or black specks that flash (probably what cam9786 is calling snow). Some times whole textures in games will change color (usually redish).

If i remember correctly, specks (white or black) are usually caused by the card's core having problems. Discolored textures are memory related. Garbled characters, and lines can be caused by any part of the card.
