Painkiller - Developed by People Can Fly

Great single player experience, awesome sound effects, instense action, and extremely frightening under the right conditions (i.e., playing at night in a dark room with headphones). Multiplayer needs work.

Are you a wimp? Or are you man enough to make it through the demo?

Pixel Shader 3.0 Planned

From an interview with Adrian Chmielarz about the Painkiller expansion pack at HomeLan Fed:

http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=24919

HomeLAN - What graphical improvements, if any, will be put in the expansion?

Adrian Chmielarz - By the time the add-on is released, many sweet games will be already out there, games that bring a lot of technology improvements (like DOOM 3 or HL2), so of course we’ll add our share of new stuff as well. We have hired a new programmer whose only task is to add new cool FX to the game. Definitely expect Pixel Shader 3.0 support.

Gameplay Benchmark Results

The following benchmark results are based a single gameplay scenario I created that consists of a fragfest in the Atrium Complex courtyard. This is a pretty intense stress test. ForceWare 61.76 drivers were used. Note that trilinear and anisotropic optimizations were disabled.

Hm indeed it is a fantastic game! Although... you coulda picked a better level to take screenshots of. There's some truly amazing looking level work in this game.

Yeah... just recently beat the game on Trauma... it was a nice experience. I love the singleplayer but I absolutely cannot STAND the multiplayer.

gj mike :)

could you test it on some of the more graphically challenging levels as well perhaps in a follow-up article?

Thanks. I'm not aware of the graphically challenging levels since I haven't progressed too far into the game. Can you give me a specific area? I suppose I can ask someone to send me a saved game if the area is further along.

I thought the monastery level in particular was incredible.

And, of course, the mind-blowing quality and originality of the finale.

Here are some links to the console commands in Painkiller, it looks like you can load a specific map but only in MP? I don't have PK yet so I cannot test, anyway something here might come in handy.

The framerate sometimes really dips into the 20s in certain levels for me when i played the game on 5950/9800 .

i'm not going to play it again until i get a new video card . :ORDER:

& glad to hear about the PS3.0 support !! :)

HomeLAN - What new weapons will be used in the expansion?

Adrian Chmielarz - There will be two new weapons. One is submachine gun mixed with the flame thrower, but of course you can expect that Painkiller’s patented twist on reality – meaning both weapons will not be “just” working like you expect, but they will also have their own additions and special features.

I liked this game alright it had good sound effects and the graphics was pretty good ,I done play it three times on all the levels with my 9800pro ,waiting till I get my new card before I play it any more ,apretty good game to kill time when I want a fast paced game to play.

The gameplay was fun for me as I tried to play it in small spurts since the mindless action only keeps me interested for short periods of time. I am sure I will get the expansion pack as well.

I play this game at 2048x1536 with 16xAF and no AA (don't really need it) on my X800XT and it runs great.

I recorded a few mutiplayer demos last weekend. Unfortunately they are not indicative of single player performance since certain graphics options are not enabled, such as shadows. Although the lastest patch includes a new benchmark, it also does not mirror the gameplay experience either. My results are always within a range of 30-40 fps at 800x600 up to 1600x1200.

If any of you folks have a set of saved games using the latest patch, I would appreciate a copy. Saved games are stored under the SaveGames directory as 001, 002, 003, etc. Send them to mikec@nvnews.net.

I love this sort of action! It's not mindless at all, really. It's interesting to note that very few people have noticed the almost-CPMA movement physics they chucked into the game. Basically you just keep jumping while moving forwards, and you get a speed up which increases the longer you keep it going (there's a hard limit to the speed, I think..). Also notice that you have full air control in this game (at least while doing this sort of jumping). Turn in the air and you don't keep any inertia that would stop you from going the way you turn. It's brilliant! It's a similar feeling to that of CPMA (www.promode.org), but you have a little less control of how you move about.

This sort of thing keeps the gameplay from being 'mindless'. Play the game like you want to OWN (pwn) the monsters, and it's quite a different game. MY sort of game :).

It didn't mean to say the mindless action was a bad thing. It was a poor choice of words I guess. I like an old-fashioned shooter sometimes. I still remember firing up Wolf3D before ID created the Doom franchise.

I just send you a set of savegames compressed in .rar format. The first attempt failed I think since the file was too big so let me know if the second smaller set got to you ok.

Hehe.. indeed the last level is very awesome. It's a very different impression of a place that might be hell. And, indeed, 'war is hell'. Sounds about exactly right to me...

The last level is really cool indeed. But my two favorite levels are "Docks" and "Military base". Some very nice looking textures and the levels are very realistic. :)
Superb game. :rw:

Yeah .. it looks cool & its one of the first levels that brought my GT system to its knees !

@1600x1200,2xAA,8xAF i get around 30fps avarage & with heavy fights i get less the 20fps .

you need to unlock Trauma diffculty in order to be able to unlock it (chapter 4 level 4), & nightmare to unlcok Prison (chapter 2 level1).
god mode is always jandy too ! ;)

the readme is actually in the same download page , its not attached :(
so you have to save that page in your HDD for the commands .

these files should be installed in C:\Painkiller\data\LScripts folder (if thats folder dosent exsit .. make one)
