hello everyone, atm i have athlon xp 2100+, which isnt OC.
my motherboard is Gigabyte 7VRXP which is based on VIA KT333 Chip.
i also have 1gb of 2700 ddram (512x2).
doom3 is coming and i want to get other CPU that wont "bottleneck" my new Gefroce 6800 GT.
first i thought about gettting a new athlon xp 3000 and finish with this question but now i read that i can buy Mobile Xp 2500 and OC it easily to the speed of athlon 3200+.
my question is what do you think is better, and also if i can realy do a good OC with this old motherboard and memory chips that will worth the investment.

Probably not. The KT333 isn't known for its overclocking ability like the KT266A was or the nForce2 is right now.

so what do you suggest me based on that?

There is no CPU available right now that won't bottleneck a GeForce 6800 or Radeon X800 so that shouldn't be on your worry list. You might want to consider investing in an Athlon 64-based system. You can get the Chaintech nForce3 250 (non-GB) motherboard plus an Athlon 64 3000+ for about $300. Pair it with some good PC3200 memory and you'll be at a much higher performance realm than on your current machine.

If you want to overclock, you could take a chance on the mobile Athlon XP 2500+ and an nForce2 motherboard like the Abit NF7-S. But with overclocking there obviously are no guarantees.

I have a VIA KT333 based motherboard with pc2700 ram and just bought an athlon xp 3000+ cause it's the best chip my motherboard can handle.
I wasn't planning on overclocking it, but then I decided to give it a go by increasing the fsb. Right now I'm running it perfectly stable at 2411mhz with an fsb of 185 and I'm using a cheap hs/fan.

Run prime95 torture test for maximum heat. I am pretty sure your OC is not stable with a cheap HS on that clock.

The hell with Prime95. If my system runs stable at the clocks that I'm using for the applications that I use, I don't give a crap if some torture testing program crashes it.

BTW, mine runs Prime for hours no problem. ;)

Back on topic...

Keep what you've got and put that money towards an Athlon 64 system.
