You'll get a nice increase in FPS in all your games with a 6800. A 6800 GT would obviously be better if you can find one, but a 6800 is better than both the 9800 XT and 5950 Ultra. If you can find a 6800 for $299 or less, I'd pick one up in an instant.

5900XT to 6800 is a much larger jump than people give it credit for. the 5950/9800XT may be debatable cuz of memory sizes, But the 5900XT its no debate. You will see a very substancial increase from a 6800NU.

i saw a nice increase so far. not as much as id hoped for, but thats probably because of my AGP4x mobo and 1GB dDR333. but still it was a good increase (far cry can now be played with all high settings for me and be very playable. the volcano near the end is still a rig killer tho.) In Ut2k4, i can play @ holy **** settings @1280x1024 and not dip below 30fps on ANY level. and since this is an OpenGL card, im sure ill be perfectly fine for 1024x768 high quality doom III :)

on a side note, just for fun i tried OCing my card and mobo memory. i pushed the card from 325/700 to 360/800 and it seemed pretty stable. tho i saw some glitches in 3dmark03 in the troll and nature scenes tho im not sure if thats driver related or not as the temps never got above 60c on the card. anyways. after trying to OC the mobo memory to DDR400 spds, the system started to boot, then made what i call a bad sound and the screen went black. i almost peed myself. luckily (and thank GOD for this one) i was able to unlpug the machine, plug it back in, boot into the bios and reset the memory. also went back to default vid card speeds for now. that experience just scared the **** outta me.

If you could squeeze the money for a GT i would go for the GT which if you wanted you could usually clock to ultra levels or just below

My Geforce 6800NU clocked at 400/850, no problems. HardOCP had a 6800NU @ 400/800 running Doom III at 1600*1200 with high details and AF, 50FPS average, 30FPS minimum.

Suffice to say, if you buy it for Doom III, you are in for a treat.

Your memory isn't holding you back. I just went from 768 CAS 2.5 PC2700 to 1GB CAS 2.5 PC3200, no change.

BTW- I went from a 5800U to the 6800NU, it was a big jump forward. Painkiller is like a different game, as is Far Cry. (and the 5800U is roughly equal to a 5900XT, see benches)

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-13.html#unreal_tournament_2003 (5800U beats 5900XT in all 4x8X benches)

I Was going to buy the card soley to play doom 3. but maybe i wil lwait till i get my copy of doom and see how it plays on the 5900xt. i have no clue where it falls on those benechs at hardocp but someone said around the 5800u? i only play at 1024*768... if you guys think my card wont play it well without creating a slide show then i will go to b est buy right now and pick up a 6800

Yeh if you already got a 5900xt I'd recommend going for the 6800GT. Though the 6800NU is a significant upgrade from a 5900XT, the 6800GT will really make you feel like you got your money's worth.

ja18, you should be able to enjoy 10x7 Doom3 on a 5900XT without problems @ medium image quality. And if it gets to be too much for you, you might beable to turn specular off and enjoy a few more fps... OR kick down to low image quality... which IMO still doesn't look that bad...

Honestly, I don't think you're going to get a decent increase in performance with either the 6800nu or 6800GT. At 2.4ghz, the 9800XT and the 5900XT seem to be at a perfect balance. Pop in a 6800 series card, and the CPU just can't keep up with it -- thus you won't get THAT much of an increase

a brief blurp about my experience with the 6800nu.

I just couldn't keep up with Far Cry. I was getting dissapointing drops to 18-20fps almost all the time (especially when enemies were on the screen)-- even at medium settings. I upgraded to a athlon64 3200+ and it's been heaven since.

Your CPU will limit you. My suggestion: wait a little while until you can afford both a CPU AND video-card upgrade.

Hey new to the forums, but I have been reading them for about the last month to help decide on a new card (My old 9700 pro died :( ) Anyway I went to the 6800 non unltra and I couldn't be happier.
In canada its like 400 bucks and the GT is like over 700 after tax so in my case that wasn't really an option. My 6800nu is great though it oc's stable at 400 core and so far 831 on the memory, on my little XP3200 system with 1 gig ddr400 I can get a lil over 10k and on normal clock about 9.2k much better then the 5.5k I was getting in 3dmark03 :) Same goes for games UT2K4 is set to high and 1280 rezs and never dips below 35, and FarCry is soo much smoother , I'm really loving this lil card. Anyone that is considering one as an upgrade should be pleasently suprised with the performance.

im going to buy the 6800 in 2 weeks,on my next paycheck. ill have no bills to pay.. also ill try to buy a new cpu. for now doom 3 better run on my system, considering more than half of the poeple that will be playing the game have either a 5700u or a 5900, and 2ghz p4's

The 5900 actually puts up a pretty good show in Doom 3. Check out HardOCP's guide to see if the performance jump is dramatic enough to make the upgrade worthwhile.
