I want to give Mozilla another chance as I haven't used it since they discovered the privacy bug. I think it's been fixed now, but I also see they're working on another browser called Phoenix. I want to know what the difference is between the two and which you all think would be better.

Phoenix is also based on Mozilla code but the programmers are stripping it from a lot of Mozilla bloatware, making it faster and more efficient and a smaller download (about 7~8MB). It's still at very primitive stages (no e-mail client and such -> planed as a standalone app later on), so stay tuned for a more matured version. Right now, I prefer Mozilla 1.1, but I must say it looks quite promising, given that Opera is falling beyond on schedule. Just waiting for the first Opera 7.x release.

I tried Phoenix, but I saw a bunch of stuff missing/not functional that was present and workin in Mozilla. If Phoenix was smaller (3-4 mb) I'd look past it, but considering that Phoenix is 7 mb and Mozilla is 10, it's not that big of a difference. I'll be sticking with Mozilla from now on. :D

Thanks for the reply.

Phoenix is weird.

I do, however, like it a LOT.

It's cleaner than Mozilla, first of all. It's faster, has a lot of the features from the 1.2 beta, and is faster. :p

Now, Flash and Shockwave don't seem to work with it yet, but that may be because it's based on Mozilla 1.2 code and I haven't tried that hard to get it to work. ;)

Give Phoenix a few months, and it will be a GREAT browser, but right now, it's almost the same as Moz.

I think I found a bug in Moz 1.2. If I have a tab open, then open a second one, then right-click on the first to close it, the page on the second tab will disappear and not even hitting refresh will bring it back. I have to close down and reopen the program to get it back.

Highly annoying and enough for me to drop that version and wait for the next build(s). I'm using Avant Browser at the moment and it's pretty darn good, at least on my laptop. Will have to see how it works on my desktop. :)

hmm I'm still using Mozilla 1.01... I guess I need to update.

If your present version is working for you, don't update because odds are you'll run into the same bug I described above.

Just use 1.1, it's pretty friggin' stable.

I use 1.3 and I don't know why people are slithing. I love Phoenix.

Moz 1.2 is buggy. Use 1.1 instead.

I'm currently on a computer with 64 megs of ram on a dial up connection using Opera. The reasons I'm using it is because IE was not finishing some downloads. Opera not only completed them, but also allowed for resume if the computer crashed or I wanted to reboot. I'm also able to conveniently turn off the graphics downloading on webpages to speed things up while using a p2p program. Question is, for this situation... is mozilla, or pheonix any better for my current situation?

madthumbs, I much prefer Mozilla to Opera, especially because it can correctly render pages that Opera cannot. It's just as fast as Opera on my own dialup connection and I like the interface a whole lot better.

The download manager that comes with it, however, I find to be highly suspect. You may want to pick up Flashget, DAP or similar program to help you cope with downloads.

I'm still really liking Avant Browser, however. It's not crashed my desktop and like previous versions have. It has the tabbing feature I want while still retaining the IE base.

The only bugger to Mozilla is the Bookmarking system. The IE favorites cannot be sorted by name like in IE. It totally sucks, that's why I don't use it. I voted it as a bbug. Please vote for it guys:

Well, you've seen Mozilla and Phoenix mentioned (both available at http://www.mozilla.org). There's also another freebie, built on the IE services, that has tabbed browsing, popup blocking, etc. Check it out at http://www.avantbrowser.com. It's a small (< 1MB) download. Almost as much of a memory hog as Mozilla, though. I like it for a lot of things, but Mozilla is still my main browser.

Cheers,

I like Mozilla now. Before I use to dislike it. The only reason I now use IE is because of Flash, RealPlayer, or Windows Media Player embbed plugins in web pages.

OK... apparently I decided to check like the INSTANT they posted the changelog, and it's out now.

Holy Crap It's Fast.

The forums here load INSTANTANEOUSLY.

It's REALLY scary.

And, I found that Flash does not like to install on Phoenix 0.4, so just take this zip file and place its contents in C:\Phoenix\Plugins.

Flash and Quicktime, I think (http://mywebpages.comcast.net/malchus/plugins.zip)

Phoenix 0.4 is much better than 0.3. It's fast and pretty darn compatible. Just need to put the plugins (so kindly provided by SSC) in their appropriate place and snag some new themes and I'll be good to go. This is starting to look like everything I want in a web browser. :D

Are there any skins for Phoenix btw?

Opera 7.0b1 now available.

I'm hearing good things about it aside from some people having it crash after a few hours. One is that web pages appear to be properly displayed now.

-Faster
-New email client
-Improved standards support
-Now you can drag bookmarks
-Smaller size
-Sleek new look
-Multiple user support
-Combined MDI and SDI (tabbed vs non tabbed browsing)

still the same 'ol stuff. That browser for whatever reason cannot render this forum page correctly. Mozilla/Phoenix and IE work just fine. But in Opera, the divider that separates this forum's user name/location/avatar from their post doesn't go down in a straight line. If I hadn't uninstalled it I'd post a screen shot. Oh well, Phoenix is working just fine for me.

Now that I've fixed el stupid up (Windows 2000) I've got mozilla (1.2 beta) going faster than phoenix .3 was. I don't see a point to checking it out yet...
