View Full Version : X Crashes with font AA

Here's the problem:
When I enable font antialiasing in for QT applications, my X crashes after a short while, especially when browsing with konqueror.

All applications freeze, keyboard fails, though I can still move my mousecursor. I can also log in through ssh, but as soon as I kill my X server the whole system freezes.

I'm using debian-woody, XFree 4.1.0, kde 3.1b2, Qt 3.1.0, kernel version 2.4.19, on a duron800, kt266 chipset, and a GF2mx.

Ofcourse working without AA isn't so bad, but the more eye candy the better :)

I recomend upgrading to XFree86 4.2, may be your problem dissappears into thin air.

Also I see you're using a beta KDE, try a stable version: I use 3.0.2 without problems with font antialias in my laptop.

i already downgraded from XFree 4.2 to 4.1, which had no effect.

And as for kde3.1b2, a friend of mine has the same beta2 installed on his laptop, with font AA enabled, also without problems. maybe it has something to do with a bug specific to the gf2mx.

since both you and the person mentioned above have got AA running smoothly on a GF2Go.

Okay, you did right. The only thing I can do is give some (un)useful ideas:rolleyes:
As you realized it could be a GF2MX issue: the best thing is to have a look the system logs. Don't kill Xfree, try loging as root in another VT and examine the logs, it's a heavy task, but you will find clues right there.

Have you tried font antialias in gnome?

Nevertheless, I think the work involved doesn't worth.

hmm.. that might be worth a try, though i just cleared all gnome apps off of my pc :)

and i'll have a dig through the logs too, see if i can find something there..

do you know how i can increase the verbosity of the XFree logs? might just give some more clues.

and thanks for the tips, though I'm afraid it's a bug somewhere somehow ;) ...
