tit for tat, and then repeat and continue for as long as possible. a contract is a contract, or is it? not in F1 it appears (as well as other sports, where multi-millionaire athletes can dictate almost anything they want, ie where they want to play, who's on the team, who's in management, etc). whatever happened to the notion of honouring one's contract? the self-proclaimed best driver in F1 may be a good driver, but he is showing quite bad character with his decision to bolt BAR. this is another example of why average people (fans) are beginning to despise pro-athletes (pampered babies).

if button is allowed to break his contract, then it sets a pretty bad precedent in F1: a contract wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on.

and, do you think Richards still has Villeneuve's name in his PDA? the soap opera that is F1 can be, at times, really interesting, and methinks this subplot will continue for awhile longer, especially when the lawyers get involved.

If the move turns out to be true, i don't like it. Although it is not the first time it's happened in F1, nor is it going to be the last one i agree about the bad character attitude. Whether there was a contractual hole or not, the guy looked to have an agreement with them (BAR) so its not nice at all. I'm more interested to see their new nose in Hungary.

more on this story. while other drivers have tried, and succeeded in bolting teams whilst under contract in the past, there is now a means to block such moves:

Not suprisingly, there is a precedent for what Button is attempting. Alain Prost left McLaren to join Renault in 1980 while Ayrton Senna bolted the Toleman team for Lotus in 1984. Even Michael Schumacher moved from Jordan to Benetton after just one race in 1991.

In fact, it was Schumacher's move which led to the establishment of the Contracts Recognition Board, which was called in to decide a dispute between David Coulthard in 1994. The Scotsman was under contract to Williams but had attempted to join McLaren for the 1995 season. The CRB however blocked the move, siding with Williams and forcing Coulthard to drive for them in 1995 before moving on to join McLaren in 1996.

a contract is a contract, and it must be enforced.

well, BAR, backed up by a decision by the Contract Recognition Board (which is likely preliminary), has concluded that button is indeed under contract and has to remain with the team.
