No, it means you can "Pre-Load' it, which is having it ready for download through POS Steam. It usually releases 2 - 3 weeks after Pre-Load date. So, expect to be playing HL2 around Aug 31 - Sept 7. Oh, and Steam Version's will be like Basic HL- 40 bucks, Single + Multi +CS:Source + Mods HL-50 bucks.

Trust me, he wouldn't pre load if he wasn't sure. Now that he said pre load, it has to be on Steam on Aug 17. They can release it after that whenever they want, usually 2 - 3 weeks after pre-load date.

I hope this is true as I, like a lot of you have been anticipating the release of this game for some time now. I've never been more excited about a game ever.

So what about those of us who won't touch steam with the proverbial 10-foot pole? When do we get our greedy hands on those CDs?

Within a few days it will be available thorugh the usual warez channels, cracked and ready to use.

They'd better release it in stores quickly. A lot of people don't have a fast connection to d/l it through steam, no to mention those who don't trust this system or those who still like to own a CD and a manual, in the "old fashoned" way.

If I download HL2 from Steam via my ATI voucher, can I then burn it onto a CD and play single player without going thru the steam nonsense?

This isn't a full pre-load of HL2, only stuff that won't change (like textures and audio). So HL2 can still be a while away if they encounter some show stopping bug in the CS:S beta.

and umm...stalker...got delayed :(

Figures. So if you have steam you can download a few textures and sound effects, but no actual game.

Well, that's good news. We'll see how it actually plays out, though I doubt that they would pre-load Steam and then go on another year's delay.

Oh, and :nanahump: you, Steam. They're still going to have to release patches and content updates via traditional channels (or someone'll release them to traditional channels out of the Steam cache file) - I'll be taking my updates that way. I've heard bad, bad things about Steam and if it worked well, I'd be all for it. But it don't. The only way they'd get me to use it is if it was the only way to get my hands on Half-Life Source.

so the cd release is "expected" 9/1, 9/2? I wouldnt put steam on my hd even if they were sending hl2 through it for free.

I got an answer from the Steam msg board..

The "GCF" files will be in CD sized chunks

you will have to go thru Steam, but there's an "offline" mode to it.

BTW, is Steam P2P?
