I'm building a computer for when I go off to college in a couple weeks, and have finally selected all the parts and put together a NewEgg wish list: http://secure.newegg.com/app/WishHistoryReview.asp?position=HISTORY&submit=VIEW&ID=888935. As you can see, I'm not planning on just writing papers with it... ;). I'm getting SnapStream BeyondTV3, and already have a 19in flat-tube CRT, so I also won't have to bother with buying a TV.

Do my selections appear good? Any known incompatibilities?

Thanks!

Danger Will Robinson Danger!

I've read nothing but problems with that Abit VIA motherboard. If you want stability, a good overclocker, and overall an excellent motherboard for Athlon64 s939, get Nforce3 instead:

yes I know that's a more expensive board, but it'll also give you fewer headaches. If you wanna wait for a more affordable Nforce3 S939 board, MSI is coming out with one in the next few weeks, and is expected to be priced under $150

the power supply is also weak...

the 12v rail should be able to put out 18amps in order to run an a64 system... the power supply you have listed is rated @ 17amps peak...

consider something which has around 25amps min on the 12v rail to support the cpu AND the video card w/o problems...

opps, I forgot to check that. Definetly do not go with that "Vantec" power supply. I recommend no less than an Antec True 430w, or larger if you can afford it.

Yeah, I have been debating over the Abit VIA and the Gigabyte nForce3, but they seem to have equal problems. There's in fact a thread in this very forum that seems to say the VIA is just as good as the nForce3...?

I read a review that said the reviewer was giving up his 550w PSU for the 400w Vantec; you're fairly certain it wouldn't be powerful/stable enough for me? I'd go for the Antec TRU430, but the reviews seem to suggest the Vantec is quieter (and a 2-year old Antec TruePower PSU I have is moderately noisy), and people have reported incompatibilities with Antec PSU's and the Abit AV8 motherboard :(

Thanks for the feedback; keep it coming! :)

The VIA S754 boards are decent, it's just that the Abit one seems to give more problems than the others.

Well, considering all the available 939-pin motherboards seem to have a lot of problems, and because the XP3500+ just went out of stock at NewEgg, I think I'll buy a MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce3 250GB and a retail XP3200 NewCastle (2.2ghz w/ 512kb cache) instead. Using the money I saved, I can always upgrade to a nForce 5 or 6 in a couple years :)

You will most certainly save a lot of money, and I am completely confident that an Athlon64 3200 should last you thru college. Enoy! :)

Thanks :)

Because the eVGA Geforce 6800GT keeps going out of stock before I can order it, I also decided just to get the 6800NU instead. Hmm, maybe I'll use the money I saved on that to buy an xbox and the X2VGA+ adapter when Halo 2 comes out :).

I ordered the 6800NU a day later than the rest of my order, so I'll be using a GF2MX until it arrives...ah, the irony ;)
