View Full Version : Anyone having "jerkiness" with 6800 series and UT2K4?

I find that even with the most basic IQ settings, there is a lot of intermittent "jerks" in the first few minutes of UT2K4. I tried playing Torlan by myself with no bots and this did not alleviate the problem, so I don't think it's a system bottleneck (I have 1 GB RAM and a Raptor HDD so I would seriously doubt that's the problem anyway)

I'm using a 6800GT and Forceware 61.77 on a clean install with Fast Writes disabled, "Quality" driver settings with Trilinear and Aniso optimizations both set to "on".

And when I say "jerks" I mean very quick (but annoying) pauses, not the 10 second freezes that some people are talking about in FarCry and other games.

Any help appreciated, thanks! :)

I see it in BF Vietnam when you start a map and in GTA VC. Very annoying.

I see this on my 6800U in several games as well. Still haven't found a way to get rid of it. :lame:

do you disable vsync? I never thought my GT liked vsync much at all..fixed any stuttering for me.

Yeah I've tried that but it didn't help.

i believe it to be a driver bug. Some say the beta 62.20's and up fix some of these stuttering problems

I believe it has something to do with texture loading.

I get the stutters at the beginning of BF1942 and UT2004. Its really bad it feels like packet loss when youre online and then suddenly your view is 45 degrees from where you think it should be.

It only does it for about 5 seconds and then its fine. If the server reloads the same map I wont get the stutters again.

When I first enter a new map I just spin my view 360 to get it over with :)

^^ do you think nvidia can fix this in a driver release then?

I use Forceware 65.62 beta on my setup and get no jerkiness in any game. Only 1 problem, these drivers seem to be no good for Flight Sim 2004. The game won't even load.

Well I guess all signs point to new drivers, so hopefully nvidia will release some new non-beta drivers soon.

Anyone getting pretty slow performance in ut2k4? I'm running it @ 1024x768 4x AA 16x AF, everything maxed, and it dips down to 20fps some places in onslaught. Even my 9800Pro ran this much better.
Sys specs:
a64 3200+ newcastle @ 2.5GHz
epox 8KDA3+
1024MB ocz pc3500EB @ 250MHz 3-3-2-10 1T
MSI GeForce 6800GT @ 400/1.1
It's doing 12.5k in 3dmark 03 and 24k in 01, so I would think that it's okay.
Any ideas?

I see this problem the most with Farcry and UT2004, but only when I play online. I'm supposedly getting good ping (<50), but still the jerkiness. I hope this gets fixed soon because it is pretty annoying..

the 65.xx drivers floating around seem to fix the problem for me, but they also cause my comp to BSOD every time I exit the game, so it's not really a practical option as of yet... others are having no problems at all with these drivers though, so you might want to give it a shot

I only get jerkiness when the game runs at low framerates .. i think the fps differnece in such fast game cause this ?

Well holy crap another person with the issue...I have the same. I was fixing to reinstall FS2004 but I may try a different driver...but Doom3 and Far Cry ar running great now...I hate to mess with a working system, only, it ain't really working right if FS2004 won't load... :retard: :lame:

disabling vsync fixed the problem for me in all driver sets and increased my framerate anywhere from 50-100%

I didn't think Vsync was supposed to affect performance, just limit the framerate from going over the monitor's refresh, but I guess UT's vsync is all kinds of screwed up. Maybe that's why it's only in the .ini file and not in the game to begin with? Ah well. Triple Buffering works well enough for me!

I you want to play with vsync with good framerates, enable triple buffering in the UT2004.ini

I find the onslaughtmaps much slower on my 6800U card compared to the X800XT. Pimeval and Dawn for example dips to 45 fps on the 6800U and a steady 90 on the X800XT.

I got some weird performance drops in Far Cry whenever I reloaded a save game - I run the game at 1600/122 with 4xAA/8xAF. It turns out that I needed to keep my AGP aperture size at 128 or 256 to prevent this.

This may be something to look at if you haven't done it already.

yeah I've got it on 256 but maybe I'll give 128 a shot later just for giggles.. honestly I get way better performance in the new x64 eval anyway, but I can't turn my vid fans down with x64 so the sound drives me nuts!
