From what I've heard, it's Arctic Fox from 1986.

Are there any FPSes that came before that?

I thought wolf 3d was the first, FPS.

actually, the first one was called catacomb abyss from idsoftware, it was before wolfsenstien3d. the game wasn't popular at all, but it was indeed the first according to idsoftware.

edit: i don't think catacymb abyss was from idsoftware... not sure what it was from though.

Is Arctic Fox considered to be an FPS?

here's a link on catacomb abyss...

http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId,410/

it doesn't say much, but i know in the gold pack of return to castle wolfenstien (it comes with wolf3d and enemy territory), it has a lot of info on the "first" fps's and it says that catacomb abyss was the first to their knowledge.

edit: i guess they were wrong? *shrugs* it claims november of 1991 on that website, though i'm not sure how accurate it is.

On a floppy, I have a game called Curse of the Catacombs that looks almost exactly the same as "Catacomb Abyss", except for the title screen. Fun game :ORDER:

Oh, and this is my first post...hello everyone

Spasim (1974) apparently is the first game in the FPS genre.

According to this source : http://www.wordiq.com/definition/First-person_shooter
Interesting read too : http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Game_engine

I remember playing Catacomb 3D and Wolfenstein 3D during mid to late 1992's on a 486.

What about Midi Maze? When did that debut?

I suppose FPS means the game would have to have a first person view, which has been present since the non 3D adventure games in the early 80s, but what kind of 'shooting' would it have to have? Before Wolf 3D was Ultima Underworld, a true 3D game which had bows, slings and other range weapons. The genre just blurs a bit before that time because it wasn't really defined.

I personally think hl one was the best single player experiance ever.

It introduced story telling through enviornments in fps's.

Removing the 'cinematics' and making you feel the u were not in control of the world around you.

somthing every FPS since hl has tried to recreate with only CoD and Doom 3 getting close.

HL I don't even know why people think it's a good single player experience. It's not that good in my opinion. Deus Ex had a great story, hl1 = suckage.

Hl stinks, deusex rules, hl story was pretty intresting but pretty standard at the same time, deus ex is one of the only non war fps where you kill humans, not monsters

We use to find this stuff attractive too. I remember the first time I saw Goldeneye on n64 my jaw dropped. After going back and playing it now I cant believe I use to think this game looked real. Imagine what it will be like 15 years from now when we look back on the games of today and say how ugly they looked compared to what we will have then.

I think unreal 3 will do it for me. I can't believe the life like graphics and fluidity of it.
