View Full Version : BFG Geforce 6800 Ultra and ASUS A8V incompatibilities?

My system specs are as follows:
Asus A8V Delux
AMD Athlon FX 53 939 pin
1 gig of Corsair TwinX1024-3200C2PT
HItachi deckstar 160 gb 2x in raid 0 array
Sound Blaster Audigy ZS Platinum
Lite-On DVD Reader
Lite-On CD-RW/DVD reader
Lite-On DVD+-RW/CD-RW/DVD Reader

I have a BFG Geforce 6800 Ultra OC, and it has never booted to windows with this new card, it just hangs at a black screen after the POST screens shows and the raid check shows. I figured o a reformat might fix this, but it does the same thing with the XP CD. The video card however works in a much older system with an ASUS A7V333 mobo. The system in the specs above also works with an older PNY Geforce 4 ti 4400.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they went about solving it, or maybe if i just got stuck with a flawed video card,

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

I've got a BFG 6800 Ultra O.C, well two of them to be exact, one died after trying to get it working, waiting to return it, and I was advised to order a new one while the company I bought it from arranged to pick up the dead one. My mobo is an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe and I've had a huge number of issues, still trying to get to the exact cause at the moment. Lots of screen corruption, hangs, reboots etc. I've slowly been trying to remove the problems. So far I have

1) Removed half my RAM
2) Disabled all non-essential BIOS settings, especially legacy hardware.
3) Running without the side panel.

The card has been working on and off all day. I've been playing Doom 3, Far Cry and run it through 3DMark03 a few times. All seems fine but I'm still getting the odd boot problem - I can tell its going to fail straight away as the Windows XP progess bar (on boot screen) will show corruption and that's it, when Windows loads it shows a screen of rubbish and the PC needs to be rebooted. I'm beginning to wonder if there is an issue with Ultra's and Asus mobo's.

My BFG 6800 ultra I got from FRY's was dead when I got it, I tryed it in my p4c800-e and it still didn't work so I bought a BFG 6800 GT and it works in my A8V FX-53.

Hey, I've got a very similiar setup:

Case: Antec SLK3700-BQE with 1 120mm stock fan outake and 1 AcoustiFan 120mm intake
PS: ENERMAX Noisetaker 470W "EG475AX-VE-SFMA"
CPU: AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64 FX-53
HS: Thermalright Copper Heatsink "SLK948U" (with Artic Silver 5 compound)
w/FAN: AcoustiFan™ AF92CT always running at around 2200 rpm (shorted sensor)
Mem: CORSAIR 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 TWINX1024-3200XL
MB: ASUS "A8V Deluxe Wi-Fi" K8T800 Pro
GC: BFG 6800 ultra OC
SC: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2
1 WD EIDE 200
1 Samsung SATA 160
1 DVD-ROM (Lite-On)
1 DVD+/- R (Plextor 8x)

I haven't had any real problems with the Ultra card and the AV8. I'm playing Doom 3 now and everything is pretty much ok.

So, they can work fine together...good luck! :)

thanks for all of the replies i have been on the phone almost all day everyday since about 6 on wed night, with both BFG and ASUS to try to fix this, however it is coming to the point where i have decided the video card might be bad or possibly the mobo, are there any other ways to test this theory or ways to test my existing hardware that will tell me if there are flaws in them?

I had a similar problem with a BFG6800U, and I'm also on the Asus P4C800E board. The problem is NOT with the mobo, its bad BFG cards. I've had two different BFG6800U's on my hands and both had problems. One had bad BIOS, another had problems with memory. Pink dots/line on the screen. I've also had other 6800 series cards in the same mobo and all worked fine. Namely two different PNY 6800U and XFX 6800U and GT. All were flawless, except BFG.

It's not just the BFG Ultra cards, but looks like the EVGA ultra have the same problem. I have got 2 BFG cards both worked in older motherboards, but I took em back just to get an EVGA ultra and find out the same problem occurs (My problem is there are little lines on the screen flickering and 3d graphic programs freeze, and have big black lines on the screen and it flickers). IT's been almost a month for me trying to get my system to work, and what's weird is that my older ti4600 works perfectly with my new motherboard.

My system is Asus A8V deluxe, AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 90 nm, EVGA 6800 Ultra, 1 gig crossair ram.

I've got BFG 6800Ultra and asus p4c800deluxe-e mobo...no problems at all.
Also have BFG 6800GT and asus p4c800deluxe-e mobo in 2nd pc...no problems at all.

Something is wrong either in the bios for the cards or bios for the mobo you guys are using. its not specific to brand of card.

LOL, was just pointing it out that there is no problems here between a Aus A8V mobo and 6800U card with a 480W PSU! :D

FX53 was just thrown in for total power consumption estimates etc ;)

I have the exact same problem right here. My specs:

Asus A8V rev 2.0
BFG 6800U
550Watt Antec PSU

I have posted about this issue over at the AMD forums and here is the link:

No one seems to know whats going on. I have tried the Vid card in an alienware comp with Intel mobo and it works fine. I have likewise tested 2 other vid cards, both AGP, in the asus mobo (ATI and nvidia) and they both work. Also, this color pixelezation only happens once windows starts to load, not in the BIOS screen or in Suse Linux. What the heck is going on? Do I need to RMA it for another BFG card? Everyone at the AMD and HardOCP forums are dumbfounded on this issue like me. No drivers or anything help the situation.

ABit KV8-MAX3 here with BFG 6800 Ultra no problems at all except with UT2004. When playing online & then exit game, my pc will reboot!! & it happens with tribes V as well!! Since it uses UT2kx engine:\

Any one faced such a problem?

Havox you need to turn off DEP in your boot.ini file.

And there are threads in this forum that explain how to do it. Use the search function to find it.

I have a BFG 6800 OC, and I use to have an Asus K8N-E Deluxe. With the asus I had nothing but problems, freezing rebooting, graphics corruption. I tried a ton of different drivers for both the motherboard and card and nothing worked. My Gf 4 ti 4600 and ATI 9800 Pro worked great. I even RMA'ed my card to BFG and they told me there was nothing wrong with it and they sent it back. I bought a DFI Lanparty UT nF3 250gb motherboard, installed the same video card and, presto! no more problems.

There must of been something on my asus motherboard that didn't play well with the 6800 card.

Hopefully an RMA on my BFG will solve these problems, but their email support could be a bit faster. Does anyone know if they cross ship cards? :)

I also RMA'd my BFG 6800/OC, and they said nothing is wrong with it. It works in my old Epox nForce 2 board. Frankly, I think it's a Via issue, either hardware, software, or both. The card works fine as long as I'm in VGA mode. If any nVidia driver is loaded, black screen and reboot after the Windows splash screen. Makes you sick when you've got a $300 (at the time of purchase) paperweight on your hands.

What BIOS version do you have?

My Asus A8V Deluxe with the stock bios version auto-OC'ed my videocard. probably your card is being overclocked by the A8V bios.. upgrade to the latest BIOS version.. It shouldn't do it anymore.

I did, I have it on the 1010 BETA 02 bios right now so its the absolute latest. I have all my OCing settings in the BIOS on manual so its not OCing anything by itself. Hopefully Ill get this card out the door today.

I see lots of 6800 and AV8 not working together.
If you sell the card then get an ATI X800XT and you should be ok. All the setups with AV8 and ATI are fine
I was about to buy an AV8 and AMD64+ 3500 so I can put it my 6800GT from rig 2 in it and give rig 1 to dad after putting the 9800 in rig2 but I won't anymore
I might have to wait till summer then get PCI-E
If my 6800GT freezes too then I will sell and get AGP x800xt and then be able to get the AV8 with the 64+
Let us know how it goes with you
